NKJV SPIRIT-GILLED LIFE BIBLE Published by Thomas Nelson

Bibles are Bibles are Bibles are Bibles..... Aside from the different translations- King James, New King James, NIV, and so forth- many people just grab the first Bible they see on the shelf. Far too many people don’t own a print Bible, opting for an electronic device to present the Word to them BUT for those who desire to study the word of God Thomas Nelson has published the NKJV SPIRIT-FILLED LIFE BIBLE - Kingdom Equipping Through the Power of the Word; Jack W. Hayford Executive Editor, this is the revised and updated 3rd edition.

I am reviewing the elegant black genuine leather NKJV SPIRIT-FILLED LIFE BIBLE a book guaranteed to make any Bible collector stand in line to get their copy. (Not everyone has to have the latest cell phone!)  The thumb index, tabs I call them, are a luxury item I have not seen in a Bible in decades and with 3 ribbons to mark you place it is definitely worthy of at least taking it for a spin! (I am full of metaphors today!)

When a person declares I have my sword and holds up his Bible if you see the NKJV SPIRIT FILLED LIFE BIBLE you will know it is double edged. The contributors of this edition includes a host of men and women known throughout Christiandom for their knowledge of Scripture and their ability to teach it.

The NKJV SPIRIT-FILLED LIFE BIBLE contains commentary and lessons designed to feed your soul is food for the soul. The book of Books highlight: Kingdom Dynamics; Word Wealth; Praying the Word; Truth in Action.  The Concordance is legible and more extensive than other Bibles I have seen. I rarely look at the maps however you will not be disappointed if you look at one both in text and at the end of the Book. As with many Bibles there are cross-references to some verses and footnotes.

If you were looking to purchase a great Bible for yourself or as a gift to that Bible enthusiast you know this has to be it or at least in the running.       -written by Marsha L F Randolph

WHOLENESS by Toure Roberts

WHOLENESS Winning in Life from the Inside Out by Toure Roberts is a book worth reading. I was not going to read it because there was a forward by T. D. Jakes, I didn’t want more of the same. (Been there read that!) I chose to review it because I noticed no one else was- I often choose what no one else wants to read to review.

What makes WHOLENESS a good book is the concept is applicable in everyone’s life. We all reach a plateau in which we cannot seem to move forward but there does not seem to be a loically reason as to why. The issue, as the author explains, is not readily seen because it comes from within; it is not them it is you.

We all have life events that were unexplainable or unavoidable in which we can ignore. Often what we do is take the hurt or feelings of rejection and place it in a mental compartment deep within our souls. Like a missing piece of the puzzle that memory creates a void in our lives the author refers to it as brokenness.

WHOLENESS, is a easy to read book (I read it in a day) that systematically takes the reader from- how it happened to how to fix it. As easy as this book is to read for some people it might be hard to digest. This book, though autobiographical in nature, is about you the reader; don’t lie to yourself and think that it is not.

This is a healthy healing read.

Note: another reason I was reluctant to read this book is the authors’ face was on the cover, he looks to young to know about life. Change the cover and perhaps you would sell more books in a greater demographic- unless your target audience is Black males.    - -  written by Marsha L F Randolph

ADDENDUM: To my readers  my book MOVING FORWARD BY FAITH , published in 2011 and updated in 2016, addresses similar issues from a different perspective. Though the author says he is a church leader he does not use Scripture as the basis for his opinion I do.

NKJV FAITHLIFE ILLUSTRATED STUDY BIBLE published by Zondervan

Bibles are back! In this world of: Aps, on-line viewing, big screen on church walls, and audio versions that allow you to access Scripture, it is great to get a nice big fat old fashioned Bible. Zondervan publishing has released NKJV FAITHLIFE ILLUSTRATED STUDY BIBLE for those who not only want to read the Bible but study the 66 books.

“The Faithlife Illustrated Study Bible” helps remove the obstacles to understanding the Bible, so that people with any level of knowledge and experience can pursue an enriching study of Scripture.” (Editors Preface paragraph 3)

That is what a ‘study Bible’ should do and that is what the NKJV FAITHLIFE ILLUSTRATED STUDY BIBLE does. What I like about this Bible is the presentation of timelines, somehow they make more sense to me than I have found in other Bibles. Also the family trees and graphics of various structures are easy to examine and understand. The space dedicated to the various illustrations in this illustrated study Bible is what makes it worth the investment.

Years ago, when I first started reading Scripture, I did not want a Bible with commentary; they were not called ‘study’ Bibles back then. Study Bibles have come a long way and the NKJV FAITHLIFE ILLUSTRATED STUDY BIBLE is something I would recommend to a person who has never read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation before.

I am not going to say this is my new favorite as I have said with some reviews but this one is definately a keeper and a go to reference tool as I study God’s word.

GOVERNMENT VS GOD by Fenton Ward

What I expected and what I read were not the same, but I don’t always read the subtitles when choosing a book for review. GOVERNMENT VS GOD,  Twenty-First Century Insights into Revelation, A First Century Riddle  by Fenton Ward is actually a study of the book of Revelation.

Chapter by Chapter GOVERNMENT VS GOD shares insight as to how what is going on in the world today has been written about in Scripture. Though it is easy to read it may not be easy to digest, those who are comfortable with the book of Revelation and have some knowledge as to what is going on in the world will have no difficulty getting through the almost 300 page text.

This book is a study- manual and not really something you would get for casual reading. Though I recomend it for reading, for me it took a while to get through it. But, whenever I read non-fiction I like to evaluate the truthfullness of what is being written, this takes time. Not only does the author reference other books in the Bible, which is expected, he also references non-biblical ideologies / philosophies such as Marxism.

This book is more important today than ever before since many individuals are embracing a marred presentation of what it means to be a follower of Christ.  GOVERENMENT VS GOD presents a systematic study of the world today by applying the book of Revelation to the modern Believer.    — written by Marsha L F Randolph

HOPE FOR EACH DAY by BILLY GRAHAM

The book is: Billy Graham “HOPE FOR EACH DAY- Words of Wisdom and Faith”. It is a rerelase of daily devotional that was first released in 2002 hope is still needed thus the book is still relevant. It has been updated to reflect the climate of the day.
Some people you may say: “I do not need another daily devotional”. I don’t. Others may say: “I have given people daily devotionals every year it is time for something different.” Well, I don’t give them but I do get them, not to mention the daily devotional books I have reviewed! But this is Billy Graham! And this is words of hope.

Hope for every day is something we all need in this sex crazed hyper-sensitive world. As Believers we see how Satan and his demonic force has placed himself into a prominent position throughout the world, even in some churches- we need hope. HOPE FOR EACH! DAY reminds us daily that: “…even when circumstances have been hard or the way unclear, God has still surrounded me with His love.” (Preface by Billy Graham)

The reason I am keeping this book that I was given is because HOPE FOR EACH DAY. Just looking at the title on the cover of this leather bound book reminds me that my hope is in the Lord. I have scanned through the days and see so many words of hope as only Pastor- Evangelist Billy Graham could speak them. If you have never owned a Billy Graham book - this is the one, or at least your first one.  Written by Marsha L F Randolph

THE BELIEVERS CODE by O. S. Hawkins

What an unexpected surprise! When I received THE BELIEVER’S CODE- 365 Devotions to Unlock the Blessings in God’s Word, by O. S. Hawkins, I was pleasantly surprised. First I had to chase my daughter to get the book since she opened the mail when it arrived.

FIRST IMPRESSION: The book looks elegant very inviting.

This book invites the reader to go deeper in Scripture. THE BELIEVER’S CODE is a daily devotional but, for me, it goes beyond a quick read in the morning or before you go to bed. This is a mini-Bible study book, I cannot imagine how anyone could read one day and not want to search the Scriptures for more.

The format of each devotional is as follows: Scripture, Comment, Code Word, Prayer. The “Code Word” is what makes this devotional unique. Take for example: June 8 entry. The Scripture is John 14:6 and the Code Word is “THE”. “The” is a very important word within the context of Scripture  because we know that Jesus is “the” way. This format makes the devotional something you will want to meditate on.

I am excited to begin my personal journey in Scripture using this book. Chances are I amy stay on one devotional for longer than the given day but then this is what I do- study the word daily. This is one book my daughters will not be getting.  - -  written by Marsha L F Randolph

THE HOLLYWOOD COMMANDMENTS by DeVon Franklin with Tim Vandehey

I firmly believe that God wants His children to work everywhere, including Hollywood; we are to be the light where there is darkness. THE HOLLYWOOD COMMANDMENTS- A Spiritual Guide to Secular Success by DeVon Franklin with Tim Vandehey shares wisdom necessary for those who have a desire to work secular jobs especially Hollywood.

I find it amazing that this easy to read yet informative book has been released as reports of sexual inappropriateness in Hollywood are being revealed among the entertainment elites. Nothing happens by accident or coincidence and as this writer believes he has been lead by God to write this book I believe God knew what would be presented in the news at the time of its' release.

It is important to know that you do not have to be in Hollywood to glean wisdom from this book. Anyone who has dreams of success in a career even within the church should know the 10 principles revealed:

  1. Your Prayers Alone Aren’t Enough
  2. You Are The Talent
  3. You Have to Carry a Crown Before You Can Wear One
  4. You Have to Know the Rules to Play the Game
  5. Your Gut is Hiding God
  6. You Get What You Negotiate (Not What You’re Worth)
  7. You Must Master the Walk of Faith
  8. Your Difference Is Your Destiny
  9. Your Amnesia Is Your Asset
  10. Your World Is Smaller Than You Think

Many Christians have become caught up in the ways of this world , we were commanded to be in the world but not of, like, the world. Read each of these principles, commandments, again- it is foundational wisdom for anyone moving into adulthood. For me THE HOLLYWOOD COMMANDMENTS is confirmation that I am doing the right thing in not compromising who I am in exchange for more books sold. For others this book will be a reality check, a reminder that as children of God they need to live as such.  GET THIS THE HOLLYWOOD COMMANDMENTS.   — written by Marsha L F Randolph

CAN I BE SURE I'M SAVED by R C Sproul

CAN I BE SURE I’M SAVED by R. C. Sproul is a book you should read; period. I first heard about this FREE ebook from a Facebook Bible study, they were discussing chapter three however before that I was having a discussion about salvation with a friend. Though it was not necessary to do so to follow along with the discussion I did download the book and read form chapter one to the end.

I have been increasingly disturbed at the number of individuals who believe in Jesus and have been faithful in church attendance (40 plus years) who do not know what true salvation is and are not sure they will go to heaven when they die. Then there are others who, by virtue of church and tithes records, assume that they are good with God. Just when I thought I had seen and heard it all a friend of mine, who knows the Bible inside out and has lead others to Christ, questioned her own salvation. CAN I BE SURE I’M SAVED addresses these personality types and more.

I cannot begin to explain how important it is for each person to understand their position in Christ. I believe, as the old folks use to say: Everybody talkin’ ‘bout goin’ to heaven ain’t goin’ there! CAN I BE SURE I’M SAVED explains why.

This book is so important that I purchased two print copies, I would suggest you do the same. — written by Marsha L F Randolph

CHASING GRACE by Sonya Richards-Ross

What does an athlete know about grace? In the book CHASING GRACE -What the Quarter Mile Has Taught Me About God and Life by Sonya Richards-Ross answers this question. The concepts are presented in four key words: Push, Pace, Position and Poise but it is all about determination.

In this book, CHASING GRACE the author shares with the reader the journey she took in achieving her goals. This path included such disappointments as discovering someone she admired was not such a shining star. How do you handle discovering someone you thought was perfect wasn’t really?

This book is a quick and easy read and contains real life details about the ups and downs of being an athlete from a Christian perspective. There is nothing really dramatic found within the pages but there is a very real story being told- success is not always pretty. The lessons the author learned as an athlete have been successfully transferred to life in general from a Christian perspective.

This is not your average motivational book which is refreshing in this day of motivational speakers. With practical tips presented in a digestible format this book is a good read and I recommend reading it.  — written by Marsha L F Randolph

AGAINST ALL ODDS by Sheila Hodges

In order to appreciate AGAINST ALL ODDS by Sheila Hodges one must have gone through so much pain that you do not have time for technical or sophisticated words. Thus this book is not for everyone- only those who are in the midst of pain.

I know the author personally, I was truly hesitant about reviewing this book because I did not want to give my friend a bad review- if it is bad I will say so. I believe everything has a time and it was time for me to read and review AGAINST ALL ODDS. I had witnessed her passion in writing and promoting this book, I know the love of God’s children that motivated her to take the time to write and so I sat down one day when the house was quiet with a cup of coffee and McDonald’s hotcakes and sausage breakfast and began to read.

Written in a narrative form from a Christian perspective AGAINST ALL ODDS it is only 41 pages. A professional would say she jumps from subject to subject. A person who was not ready to deal with his or her pain would declare the book does not make sense but the book is good. Sheila Hodges, who has a Masters Degree and a host of other business and theological credentials writes as she speaks; there is no room for misinterpretation.

Woven within the narrative of this pseudo-biography are life nuggets and seeds of faith implanted by the word of God. The main character “Wanda” did not have an easy life but she had hope which is the on going thing of this novella.

AGAINST ALL ODDS is a story of one woman who overcame abuse and is living a God centered life. The context in which the book is presented makes it ideal for a person who is going through or gone through a very difficult time. It is clearly not a book for everyone, but if you have a friend who is hurting it is worth the read. Xxx Marsha L F Randolph

IGNITED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT by Ivy Adjivon

IGNITED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT by Ivy Adjivon is a testimony of the power and purpose of the Holy Spirit in the life of a Believer, the authors. In sharing her personal testimony the author is able to validate the necessity of the Holy Spirit.
This is a short book, 28 pages in total, which means the author gets straight to the point without a lot of unnecessary filler. Much of the book involves a conversation Ivy Adjivon had with the Holy Spirit that points out how important He is in our life. IGNITED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT is a quick and easy to read booklet that is worth reading.

I recommend this book.

BELIEVE STORYBOOK by Randy Frazee

When a writer puts a lot of thought into a book it is very apparent from page one, this is the case with BELIEVE STORYBOOK by Randy Frazee with Laurie Lassaro Knowlton and illustrated by Steve Adams.I started reading this book to my eight year old grandson as soon as the book arrived and we were instantly lost in the pages.

BELIEVE STORYBOOK Think, Act, Be Like Jesus is the Bible explained on a level young children can not only understand but learn from. Beginning with the story of creation the stories of the Bible are presented to help children see the Trinity from the Old Testament to the New without neglecting the Trinity.

I like this book because it does explain the reason why we are Christians and does not over simplify Scripture.  BELIEVE agrees with what he has been taught at home, what  is taught in church and what the Bible says, I did not find any major issues with Bible interpretation. My grandson loved this book and instantly declared “It’s mine!”

I only read a few pages with him but went through the book independently. In terms of Bible study this is an excellent book to use for home and church. Each chapter begins with something to “THINK” about presented in the form of a question. There is an Old Testament story which is linked to a New Testament story by a section on “The Jump to Jesus”. The chapter concludes with “The Jesus Answer” with another age appropriate question and discussion. Finally the reader is asked to “Believe” as a Key Idea and a Key Verse is given.

This book is a definite must buy! I recommend it. Buy it as a gift. Marsha L Randolph

TRANSCENDING MYSTERIES by Andrew Greer & Ginny Owens

The first thing I had to do when I began reading TRANSCENDING MYSTERIES, by Andrew Greer and Ginny Owens, was to get use to the tag team writing incorporated in the books’ format. I also noticed that the book read like a worshipers wrote it a quick look at the authors bio revealed that this was indeed the case. What all this means: it will be difficult for people who are very technical in their thinking to quickly follow the message.
TRANSCENDING MYSTERIES- WHO IS GOD, AND WHAT DOES HE WANT FROM US? Is a Bible study of how God reveals Himself in our time of need. By examining stories in the Bible and answering the questions found at the end of the chapter the reader will be able to clearly see what many believe is a mystery.
There are a lot of books that incorporate questions at the end of each chapter allowing it to be used in group study, I would suggest that the reader use this book for personal use. Take the time to mediated on the verses in the Bible shared and seriously contemplate each question. The goal for completing this book is a personal relationship with Father God and a better understanding of how He is an intricate part of the believer.

I recommend this book.

AWAKENING FAITH by James Stuart Bell

I am not a devotional fan, however I chose to review Awakening Faith: Daily Devotions from the Early Church by James Stuart Bell with Patrick J. Kelly, because the title caught my curiosity. My first impression upon opening the book was that of happiness; there were no dates to control my reading pleasure!
Because my goal was to review the book I chose a few passages to read, however before I give you a thumbs up or a thumbs down from what I read in Awakening Faith: Daily Devotions from the Early Church I would like to point out a few tidbits.
There are 366 thoughts from various men from the past with an accompanying mini biography which makes Awakening Faith: Daily Devotions from the Early Church a great introduction to Christian history. Each thought, or entry, found includes a Bible verse,or two, upon completion of the book the reader will have read something from every book of the Bible. The index of Scripture listed according to the book in which you will find is a very thoughtful tool.
Scanning the various pages I did not find the text offensive, or condemning but thought provoking and relevant. Despite many of the passages being written over one thousand years ago each entry was easy to read and understand.
The first devotional I read was entry #160 “Stay Focused In Spiritual Warfare”. The key Bible reference was Philippians 1:9-10; within the context was an additional 1 Thessalonians 5:19 was quoted. The words by Diadochus Photice presented a practical posture for the believer to maintain and what is needed to overcome spiritual battles. I appreciated the opinion of the author and believe his words can easily be applied to lives of any individual.
After reading a few other exerts I and reviewing the remainder of the book unlike other devotionals this is one I can use. I recommend you purchase this book. I only wish I had a copy prior to Christmas because it would have made a great gift for numerous of my friends who love the Word.
I received a complimentary copy of in exchange for an honest and fair review.

DOWNSIDE UP Transform Rejection Into Your Golden Opportunity by Tracey Mitchell

Just because a book is written by a woman does not mean that it is just for women. “Downside Up: Transform Rejection into Your Golden Opportunity ” by Tracey Mitchell is categorized as: Religion/ Christian Life/Women’s Issues, though technically true for purposes of who should read it I would classify it as Self-Help/ Motivational.
Maybe the chapter “Divas, Deceivers, and Drama Queens”  is not something men can directly relate to, unless of course they are married, have a daughter, have a sister or two or have female friends but this same chapter presents 7 questions everyone should ask themselves regarding the people they are around.  “Let’s be honest: we have made some rather hasty if not outright bad decisions when it comes to selecting friends or business associates.” (page 54)  Ms. Mitchell writes.  Is this something that only women have difficulty with?
“Downside Up: Transform Rejection into Your Golden Opportunity ” well help you get out of the slump you are in if you are a sales person, or if you have just ended a long term relationship. Reading this book will help you evaluate various relationships as well as behaviors so that “it” will not happen again.
The book is divided into chapters, 11 total. At the end of each chapter there are chapter principles, Words of Wisdom (a Bible Quote), a Power Quote and a plan of action.

I recommend this book. It would be difficult to check this one out of the library because you will want to keep it.  xxx Marsha L. Randolph

BOOK REVIEW: FED UP WITH FLAT FAITH by Kathy Howard

“Fed Up With Flat Faith - 10 Ways to Pump Up Your Faith” by Kathy Howard  combines life experiences with the word of God to create an inspirational book on how to rejuvenate your relationship with God.  The author discusses both how individuals reach a point in which he or she may be in a religious rut and ways of getting out of it.
There are 13 chapters with interesting titles such as “ Who’s The Boss”, “Best Laid Plans” and “Not for Sissies”.  Readers will value the discussion on church attendance.  I appreciated the multiple bible verses that accompany the “Action” steps given as well as the explanation as to why she suggest the believer must “do”.
“Fed Up With Flat Faith” is one of those books that you pick up and start skimming through out of curiosity and then begin to read because there is a need.
Its’ publication date is March 5, 2013.I recommend this book though I would not personally purchase it.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for a review.
