A MORNING and EVENING PRAYER BOOK by Jeanie and DAvid Gushee

The following is a review of A MORNING and EVENING PRAYERBOOK by Jeanie and David Gushee. It is a collection of prayers from Protestant, Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox individuals from all over the world. There are two prayers for each day- a morning prayer and an evening prayer.

The mini-bios of the authors explains why I feel about this book as I do. (I will share in a minute.) Jeanie Gushee is a poet and has a BA in English Literature. David Gushee, PhD is a Christian ethicist (whatever that is) and serves as “distinguished university professor of Christian ethics and director of the Center for Theology and Public Life at Mercer University. A credentialed couple.

Aside from the historical nature of the works found within the book I cannot think of a reason to purchase it. Take away the dates at the top of the pages and you have a collection of prayers. The idea of mixing Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant prayers, organizations that have different understanding of Scripture, and using it as a spring board for prayer makes no sense to me.

Many of the complimentary books for review that I receive I give away, not this one. I don’t give away books in which I hesitate because of potential doctrinal errors, the authors just presented a group of prayers the writer of the prayers may not have had the understanding of GOD that most people today have. And again, the mixture of Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox prayers would not be received well by many people I know.

A MORNING and EVENING PRAYER BOOK is actually a collection of prayers. I would not recommend it be used as one would use a daily devotional.      written by Marsha L F Randolph

FIXING MY EYES ON JESUS- by Anne Graham Lotz

FIXING MY EYES ON JESUS- Daily Moments in His Word by Anne Graham Lotz is in ‘my humble opinion’ one of the best daily devotionals around. I have been gifted devotionals, reviewed devotionals and seen daily devotionals being sold in retail stores everywhere but this one is only the second one to impress me.

My first impresseion has to do with the size of the book, it is not pocket size but 8 3/4 by 6 3/4 an excellent size with a readable font! My coplimentary copy is leather bound with gold lettering title framed with a beautiful embossed floral design.  Yes, if I was giving this devotional away it would make a perfect gift!

FIXING MY EYES ON JESUS has 365 words of faith. Today’s topic, November 30th, “More Blessing” the corresponding Scripture is Matthew 7:11. The associated comments give the reader a different perspective on what a blessing really is.”The blessing God wants to give you and me can be summed up in one word-Jesus!”  As the title implies it is all about Jesus.

As I skimmed through the various dates in the book I became excited. For me this devotional though simple in it’s message, by simple I mean peaceful, is very encouraging. Think about the quote I shared above: “God wants to give you”, we all know God gives. The author personalizes it by reminding me that God cares for me and wants to give tome. I can really see myself reading more than one devotional a day!     Written by Marsha L F Randolph

JESUS OUR PERFECT HOPE - 365 DEVOTIONS by Charles F Stanley

I have come to the conclusion that we all need some type of encouragement from time to time and a friend is not always present to give it. We know that Scripture is filled with hope BUT there are days in which we don't know where to look for that nugget that will trigger our joy. Charles F Stanley Senior Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Atlanta has been teaching biblical truths for over 45 years and his consistency has gained him great trust within the body of believers. JESUS OUR PERFECT HOPE is his most recent contribution to the family of faith which presents those nuggets of encouragement we all need.
I have been given and I have obtained for review many daily devotionals over the years. I have kept some but did not really read most of what was inside, I don't think that is the case with this devotional.
Even as I read today's words: "An Anchor In The Storm" it was something I needed to be reminded of. As I read the lesson, comments, that followed the Scripture for the day, November 19, it became clear to me how to adjust my thinking. The words of the day answered my prayer.

"Jesus, help me to act in obedience, focus on You, and embrace Your Word so my faith can stay strong. Amen."

The prayer reflects the lesson which supports the Scripture reference which solidifies the confession:
"My hope is in Jesus because He is trustworthy."
This is one of the better devotionals and one that I will keep on my desk, unless it is on my nightstand.

KINGDOM RELATIONSHIPS by Dr. Ron Moseley

KINGDOM RELATIONSHIPS - God’s Law for the Community of Faith by Dr. Ron Moseley is a book that I was looking forward to reading. Unlike many of the books I reviewed this was a personal purchase that was recommended by my Pastor-Teacher and it is part of my personal faith journey. I believe the best way to find a book to read is by recommendations from people you know not book reviewers. Yes, I am a book reviewer but my opinions are based on my biases thus it should be your secondary method of determining what you read.

KINGDOM RELATIONSHIPS is presented as “reading reference” giving the reader a general understanding as to why Scripture was written as it was. It is a reminder to us all that our 21st century understanding neglects to adapt our understanding to 1st century behaviors. KINGDOM RELATIONSHIPS helps the believer adjust his or her perspective.

KINGDOM RELATIONSHIPS is 54 pages if you count: The Bibliography, Other Related Resources, Glossary of Terms and the Teaching Review questions at the end of each chapter and 32 pages of actual  content. The only reason for not reading the book in a day is to allow yourself time to consider the ideas that are presented.

Though I would not consider this book a foundation for anyone’s faith I do see it as a great study tool. If you are reading the Pentateuch (First 5 books of the Old Covenant) or the Gospels (the first four books of the New Covenant) reading this first will help you evaluate the relevance of Scripture and how you need to incorporate what is written or justify why it is not applicable to you today. I recommend this book to anyone read to take their relationship with YHWH to the next level.                                          written by Marsha L F Randolph

THE MAXWELL LEADERSHIP BIBLE Published by Thomas Nelson

I have had a copy of   THE MAXWELL LEADERSHIP BIBLE  since 2005,which is why I was very interested in reviewing the THIRD EDITION  of the New King James Version of the Bible with notes by the famous author / speaker John C Maxwell.  Two questions I am asking myself:
  1. Why would anyone purchase a John C Maxwell Bible?
  2. Is it necessary to get the newer edition if you have an older one?
Superficially, the newer copy has a great book cover but the Bible itself is red with writing on the sleeve identifying it as THE MAXWELL LEADERSHIP BIBLE - John C Maxwell NKJV. The print is bolder much easier to read. The older version I have , copyright 2002, has 1,616 pages whereas the newer one has 1,629. But we are looking for the added value as is provided by John C Maxwell himself  so let's now look at content.

First I see an exert from the writings of Kevin A. Myers "What On Earth Is God Doing? Pretty much an overview of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation - confirming that there is nothing happening today that is a surprise to God.

As I moved forward into the Bible itself, beginning with the beginning I noticed how information is presented is different but it is still the same information. Both Bibles present Mr. Maxwell's teachings on leadership laws, qualities. and issues as well as Profiles in leadership.

But with the newer edition there is more!  For years, perhaps decades, John C Maxwell has shared his knowledge of leadership from a biblical perspective through speeches, classes and book. Anyone who has ever read the Bible knows that every time you read it you learn something- THE MAXWELL LEADERSHIP BIBLE contains the somethings Mr. Maxwell has learned over the years some of which you will find in greater detail in his books.

Why would anyone purchase THE MAXWELL LEADERSHIP BIBLE?  Because Christians have to distinguish themselves from worldly leadership and the only way to do this is by studying God's words. By having leadership principles and their modern day applications pointed out being a God pleaser and not a man pleaser is that much easier.

Is it necessary to get the newer edition if you have an older one? I would say YES, if you don't have all of John C Maxwell's leadership books. NO, if you have and have read all of John C Maxwell's leadership books.  YES, if you are like me and like the idea of having reminders of various principles written in your Bible.

Though this is a review copy and I often give away such Bibles- this one is a keeper for me!

ANCIENT MODERN BIBLE- NKJV Published Thomas Nelson

Let's face it, if you want a New King James Version or even King James Version Bible you can go to the dollar store and get one. Any person going to a book store wants more than a Bible, every year there are numerous Bibles and Bible translations released, the decision as to which to purchase is not just KJ or NKJ.

Thomas Nelson Publishing company introduces a new concept of the New King James Bible version with ANCIENT-MODERN BIBLE One Faith. Handed down. For All Saints. My complimentary copy came in a the beautiful gold box you see in the picture. The Bible itself has a White hard cover with Gold and bronze  print. As many of Thomas Nelson's newer Bibles it is presented  in it's trademark comfort print (that means it is easy to read).

So, what makes this Bible unique? The presentation of commentary from voices of the past, biographies of celebrated men and women of faith, and general information to help facilitate an excellent study of God's words.  As an added bonus: "The Art of the Church" a section found at the end of the Bible contains copies of famous paintings.

Contrary to what I usually write, this is not one of my new "favorite" Bibles. I appreciate the insertion of words Eugene Peterson, Jack Hayford, C H. Spurgeon and so many more. Every believer should be familiar with the great believers of the past thus the  mini- biographies of such grates as John Wesley make this a worth while addition to my collection.      written by Marsha L F Randolph

YOUR MONEY, YOUR MARRIAGE by Cherie & Brian Lowe

I really believe that there are two issues most married couples disagree on, even if they do not talk about it: sex and money,   which is why I was excited to read and review YOUR MONEY, YOUR MARRIAGE by Cherie & Brian Lowe. Unfortunately, I would not recommend this to a couple who has been married for years; though newlyweds would benefit from this book.

The concept of blending money and marriage into one book is an excellent idea and the one plus this book has is the discussion questions at the end of each chapter. Personally, the questions were to simplistic and would not lead to areas of agreement with my husband and I.

I am sure many people would love this book. I know a few cutesie couples who don't have divorce threatening problems in their marriage that would use this book as a tool to maintain their relationship. The church I once attended would use this book in one of their small groups.

For everyone else I would suggest seeking a financial adviser to help put them on the right path. Since money problems acts as a deterrent for intimacy and marriage counseling to help with improving communication. There are separate books that can address each.

YOUR MONEY, YOUR MARRIAGE is a great concept that, for me, did not deliver. After 22 years of marriage my husband and I still don't agree but we have learned how to manage not using any of the concepts presented in this book.  As a Tax Preparer I have married clients that have disagree about how to manage money and they too have discovered a way to agree without being  disagreeable.        written by Marsha L F Randolph

NKJV SPIRIT-GILLED LIFE BIBLE Published by Thomas Nelson

Bibles are Bibles are Bibles are Bibles..... Aside from the different translations- King James, New King James, NIV, and so forth- many people just grab the first Bible they see on the shelf. Far too many people don’t own a print Bible, opting for an electronic device to present the Word to them BUT for those who desire to study the word of God Thomas Nelson has published the NKJV SPIRIT-FILLED LIFE BIBLE - Kingdom Equipping Through the Power of the Word; Jack W. Hayford Executive Editor, this is the revised and updated 3rd edition.

I am reviewing the elegant black genuine leather NKJV SPIRIT-FILLED LIFE BIBLE a book guaranteed to make any Bible collector stand in line to get their copy. (Not everyone has to have the latest cell phone!)  The thumb index, tabs I call them, are a luxury item I have not seen in a Bible in decades and with 3 ribbons to mark you place it is definitely worthy of at least taking it for a spin! (I am full of metaphors today!)

When a person declares I have my sword and holds up his Bible if you see the NKJV SPIRIT FILLED LIFE BIBLE you will know it is double edged. The contributors of this edition includes a host of men and women known throughout Christiandom for their knowledge of Scripture and their ability to teach it.

The NKJV SPIRIT-FILLED LIFE BIBLE contains commentary and lessons designed to feed your soul is food for the soul. The book of Books highlight: Kingdom Dynamics; Word Wealth; Praying the Word; Truth in Action.  The Concordance is legible and more extensive than other Bibles I have seen. I rarely look at the maps however you will not be disappointed if you look at one both in text and at the end of the Book. As with many Bibles there are cross-references to some verses and footnotes.

If you were looking to purchase a great Bible for yourself or as a gift to that Bible enthusiast you know this has to be it or at least in the running.       -written by Marsha L F Randolph

MURDER AT THE FLAMINGO by Rachel McMillan

Appreciate the process! I began reading MURDER AT THE FLAMINGO by Rachel McMillan poolside. This book was to be my summer read and it did not disappoint. The problem was the number of interruptions I had as every time I got to a good spot.
MURDER AT THE FLAMINGO is more than a murder mystery it is a classic movie in print. I was a participant in the 1937 based drama. I met each character: the anxious Hamish, the need to find herself Reggie and the various personalities surrounding the event.
What makes a novel a great book is the stories surrounding the story. In the beginning the reader is introduced to two individuals who are struggling with the preconceived ideas of parents. Unable to cope they escape to a world unfamiliar.
As you read this book, uninterrupted I hope, you find yourself going deeper and deeper into the world of 1937 night life in Boston. By the time you reach the halfway point you will be totally sucked in and no one will be able to interrupt you.
MURDER AT THE FLAMINGO is the type of book I like; filled with personality, intrigue and the lack of modern dramatic hyperbole. Far to many books today have lots of sexual descriptions and violence that the imagination becomes unnecessary; they are quick reads, mindless dribble not so with this book. It’s a good book, get it!  Written by Marsha L F Randolph

OPENING TO LOVE by Oliver Kent PhD

It is important to know the author speaks in rhythm, Oliver Kent PhD loves to dance and he writes rhythmically. I discovered this as I began to read OPENING TO LOVE.

The book is only 136 pages, something I should have been able to read in a day but I could not. In fact I struggled to read it. It took me an entire day to read the first 5 pages. Why?

As I informed the author: Whenever someone presents a book to me that is supposed to be based on Scripture I become super critical. The subtitle “Healing Your Relationship with God” made me want to really want to like this book. So many people have been hurt by traditional churches and it is my desire to help people understand that God is not the problem man is. Unfortunately, this book misses the mark.

I get it! There are so many hurting people in the world and God’s love is the ultimate healer. Though he quotes many Bible verses OPENING TO LOVE has nothing to do with a personal relationship with God.

I found each concept discussed to be lacking substance. Dr. Kent uses a lot of painful life events to explain the pain people experience: abuse and the lack of acceptance of homosexuality. There is also a discussion of heaven and hell.  Be it talking about abuse, the LGTBQA lifestyle, heaven or hell the entire discussion seemed to lead to nowhere.

I can tell you, I have quite a few friends who would love this book. Most are liberal in ideology and indifferent when it comes to faith.

I AM NOT A TRADITIONAL REGULAR CHURCH ATTENDING Christian. I do believe the Bible is the infallible word of God and the only way to establish a personal relationship with Father God is through Jesus the Son of God.

I do not recall reading anywhere in this book the only way to experience true love is to be a child of God because God is love.  Written by Marsha L F Randolph

Reviewers NOTE: In the 8+ years I have been reviewing books I have only on 2 other occasions did not want to rate the book, give it zero stars, this will be the 3rd one. I once reviewed a book in which the author informed me that his dead wife helped him write the book. I did not like it and gave it a poor review. This book is worst.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for a review.

ROOM ON THE PORCH SWING by Amy Clipston

It has been quite some time since I have read a novel primarily because I a very picky about what I read. With nothing but junk on television and after years of reading nothing but non-fiction I decided I needed a break from reality. I chose to review ROOM ON THE PORCH SWING by Amy Clipston as my first adventure into the world of non-fiction because I am facsinated by Amish life and because I love a good love story.

ROOM ON THE PORCH SWING was an easy read and, despite it being 320 pages, a quick read. I would daresay anyone who is used to reading novels could finish it in a day but it took me three days to complete.

The plot was interesting and, yes, predictable as most love stories are. The development of the relationship between the main character, Laura, and  her best friends husband gets the readers attention pretty quickly.

One of the difficulties I had was the use of Amish words at awkward points of the story. At the beginning of the book there is a glossary of the words used in the book but who wants to keep going back to look at definitions. I guessed the meaning of words based on the context in which it was used but I would have personally preferred just not be used. It seemed weird to me for a person to speak English and through in an Amish word in the middle of a sentence; but that is me.  Never-the-less this is a great poolside book.     Written by Marsha L F Randolph

HOPE OF NATIONS by John S. Dickerson

HOPE OF NATIONS Standing Strong in a Post-Truth Post-Christian World written by John S Dickerson is a strategically written book of a seminary trained former journalist. I struggled to read this book, mid-way through I realized that my problem was found in the title. “Hope” and “Post-Truth Post-Christian”, for me it was like telling me: Learn how to survive as you go to hell. I found it difficult to shake off this impression as I journeyed on.

This is a good book for intellectuals but not the casual reader.

In Hope of Nations the author succinctly details what the problem is with society today and why it happened. He details his opinion as to how a Christian should address this “Post-Truth” condition that we are all destined for, again this is his perspective.

The author uses historical data to justify his opinion and uses Scripture to validate what he has written.  His, the author’s, presentation of information though accurate plagues with my personal theology; I prefer to use biblical principles and precepts to analyze what has happened in the past as well as what is happening now. Far to many theologians justify their personal ideology by extracting Scriptures.

(To be fair John S Dickerson states this Post-Truth Post-Christian world “may happen’ not that it will.)

I have read the Book of Revelation as well as the rest of the Bible and I know that stuff has happened, is happening and will happen. The term “Post-Truth” bothers me because I believe that there will never be a time in which there is “post” truth. The truth will always exist but, as we see clearly in society today, it is not always acknowledged. (Romans 1:18:22)

One of the Conclusion found in HOPE OF NATIONS as it relates to “So what will we do?”  is: “We will resolve to live as though we are engaged in a spiritual war for the souls and minds of humanity.”  (Page 277) Since Adam at the fruit in the Garden of Eden we have been in a spiritual battle thus this is not what we “will do” it is what every Believer in the Trinity should be doing now.

The book does contain an excellent historical perspective of society in general. In order to present hope for any nation I would have preferred the writer discuss why God will heal the land and how, despite the adversities we see, God’s children always overcome.  If you read this book from a historical perspective you will find it interesting.

I am appreciative of the opportunity to review the book.    written by Marsha L F Randolph

KJV MINISTER'S BIBLE published by Thomas Nelson

If you are looking for a gift for someone you know who is entering the field of pastoral services, Thomas Nelson has published a KJV MINISTER’S BIBLE that is perfect. The box that this particular soft leather feel Bible is in service as a great holder for such a wealth of information.

I remember years ago someone asking me to perform the wedding ceremony between her and her fiance, I refused because I knew they were not ready for a marriage. I was not equipped at the time to facilitate premarital counseling. One of the many helps this book includes is an outline for six pre-marriage counseling classes.

The KJV MINISTER’S BIBLE is first and foremost the King James Bible. Included between the two Covenants are what I would call ministerial cheat sheets: Resources for the Minister. The resource categories include:  Weddings, Funerals, Dedications, Baptism and the Lord’s Supper, Worship, and Pastoral Care. The section on weddings includes pre-marital counseling as I mentioned but vows as well. Pastoral Care includes: a Home Visitation Checklist, recommended Bible verses to read depending on the situation and of course a Prayer of Salvation.

The resource found within the Old and New Covenant is actually the Nelson’s Minister Manual. Whereas, a minister may own a Bible and the manual THE KJV MINISTER’S BIBLE is both which makes it worth the purchase and a great gift.

By the way, the couple that wanted me to marry them: were divorced after 3 months.

CAN'T NOTHING BRING ME DOWN by Ida Keeling with Anita Diggs

I don’t recall the last time I was so excited about reading a book and became puzzled mid-way and then felt let down. CAN’T NOTHING BRING ME DOWN-Chasing Myself In The Race Against Time by Ida Keeling with Anita Diggs was supposed to be the biography of the first woman in history to complete a 100 meter race.
Shortly after the midway point of this 198 page book it seemed to me the tone change. It seemed that the book transitioned from being a biography with historical tid-bits inserted to a History book with biographical information added. (I am wondering what was edited out.) Though I read this book in a half a day I struggled with the last 50 pages.
Despite my disappointment in the book I do think it is well worth the purchase and something many women, of all races, should read. From a historical perspective there is a lot to learn from Mrs. Keelings life and what it was like being a single mother. From a biographical perspective her life reminds me of the Langston Hughes poem: “Mother to Son”  (see below)in the poem the mother says: “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.”
I suspect there are wounds that have yet to be healed in the heart of Ms. Ida Keeling and this is when history replaced words from the heart.                                  Written by Marsha L F Randolph

MOTHER TO SONBY LANGSTON HUGHESWell, son, I’ll tell you:Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair. It’s had tacks in it,And splinters,And boards torn up,And places with no carpet on the floor—Bare. But all the timeI’se been a-climbin’ on,And reachin’ landin’s,And turnin’ corners,And sometimes goin’ in the darkWhere there ain’t been no light. So boy, don’t you turn back.Don’t you set down on the steps’Cause you finds it’s kinder hard.Don’t you fall now—For I’se still goin’, honey,I’se still climbin’,And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.

TAILOR MADE by Alex Seely

When I began reading TAILOR MADE by Alex Seeley my first thought was Dr. Myles Munroe. Her inspirational words reminded me so much of his biblically based truths. As her personal story began to open within the biblical truths she presented I began to identify with her journey and thus the importance of this book was revealed.

TAILOR MADE -Discover the Secret to Who God Created You to Be by Alex Seeley is the best Bible based self help book a person could invest in. In fact I would go so far at to say: If you are a parent or plan to be one you need to read this book.

Other motivational speakers will challenge you to declare how great you are this book helps you why you doubted your greatness to begin with. Beginning with the introduction: “What Label Are You Wearing” the reader takes the journey of the author form wounded warrior to victorious child of God.

I am excited about this book! It is 196 pages of information as to how you go to where you are. Its’ final chapter “It’s Your Turn” makes the book personal. You write the ending, you determine which direction you will go. “No matter what your past looks like, remember that you are God’s masterpiece.” (page 197)

I was talking to my daughter a few months ago and I was giving her encouragement; as successful as she is she thought she had failed in a lot of areas. We began to talk about the things I might have said or the words of others that were seeds of failure planted in her heart. Some of the things she heard was not actual what was said; she began to uproot them all. I was able to help her because I like the author, Alex Seeley, had to uproot a lot of negativity that was planted in my life in order to believe that: “I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well.” (Psalm 139:14)

As always when I like something I can’s stop talking about it!  Written by Marsha L F Randolph

THE VINES EXPOSITORY BIBLE - NKJV published by Thomas Nelson

Gone are the days in which a person simple goes to a bookstore and grabs a King James or New King James version of the Bible. Once upon a time the only options a person had was the type of cover a Bible had. Today, the accompanying supplements to a Bible can make a person grab the cheapest Bible off the shelf and move on BUT DON’T DO IT!

Thomas Nelson publishing has once again present an option to those who want to read Scripture with understanding in the form of THE VINES EXPOSITORY BIBLE. Hmmm, that sounds like a pretty serious compilation of information, perhaps it is to much for the novice reader; it is not.

Expository: to bring clarity by presenting information in a more detailed way (my defintion).

The VINES EXPOSITORY BIBLE General Editor Jerry Vines, Pastor First Baptist Church Jacksonville FL, Retired, is a New King James version of the Bible that contains various Bible study helps. As listed on the back of the jacket the study helps include: 205 Presenting Messages, 148 Living the Message, 237 Applying the Message, 311 Discerning the Meaning, introductions to each book, a topical index and a concordance; and of course there are maps. I personally appreciate Bible application thus reading “An Anguished Cry” found in Lamentations (APPLYING THE MESSAGE| Lam. 1:12) was not only thought provoking but made the book all the more relevant to today. To discuss the sections entitled PRESENTING THE MESSAGE would make this review longer than it already is however I must say- if you are a Church Leader of any level you will definitely appreciate this discussion.

I firmly believe it is very important that people own a tangible copy of the Bible, for those who really want to know what ‘thus sayeth the Lord’ this is a Bible worth purchasing. -written by Marsha L F Randolph

NKJV MINISTERS BIBLE

Thomas Nelson’s NKJV MINISTER’S BIBLE is the first Bible I have reviewed that was not what I expected. What I thought I was going to read were commentaries that were historical in nature and suggestions as to how to present information. I anticipated seeing a lot of Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic words noted within the text. I did not see any of what I was expecting.

Tucked between the book of Malachi and the book of Matthew is what I would refer to as Pastoral cheat sheets. It is a book within a book containing “Resources for the Minister”; a compilation of how-tos. The sections include: Weddings, from pre-marital counseling to the actual ceremony; Dedications, Baptisms and the Lord’s Supper; Worship, including a worksheet to help plan the entire service; Pastoral Care, which includes ministering to the both Believer and un-Believer; Invitations, a.k.a. Alter Call; and of course Funerals. If you wanted to start your own church this would be a good Bible to get.

Personally, all book reviews are personal, I felt much of the Pastoral information presented was denominational. As I read some of the suggested plans/ remarks / ideas I thought: This sounds like what I have seen in a Catholic service. Other times I could see a traditional Baptist church flair. This is why Scripture instructs novices not to be in the ministry.
The NKJV MINISTER’S BIBLE is a great source and one I will definitely keep. For the experienced leader the information provided is a great guideline which can be adjusted according to one’s faith. There are Pastoral books that contain this information, having it in your Bible is a great idea.

This Bible is not for everyone but would make an excellent gift to one entering the ministry. Physically the Bible is beautiful enclosed in a unique box that you will not want to throw away. — written by Marsha L F Randolph

NKJV, DELUXE READER'S BIBLE

I did not know what to expect when I agreed to review Thomas Nelson’s NKJV DELUXE READER’S BIBLE. Upon arrival my first impression was how elegant the box is that the Bible is in. I equated the box that my cell phone came in except the Bible simply slid out, no need to open. I chose the cloth bound copy with a yellow spine and what they are calling gray but I say is golden/ grayish front and back cover. It also has two place mark ribbons, I have learned that one is not enough. Like many of Thomas Nelson’s Bibles the font is easy to read; so-far, so-good.

I have never read a “Readers Bible” before so it took a few minutes for me to adjust to the presentation of Scripture. I was not constantly reminded of what book I was reading, found in the header of the page on the left not on the opposite page. I had to look on the page to my left on the left column and the small red number to determine which chapter I was in and look in the folds for the numbers written in black to determine, generally speaking, which verse I was reading. The NKJV DELUXE READER’S BIBLE is as close as I have gotten to reading actual scrolls.

This is a Bible to be read as a letter should be read. It is presented as a book should be written.  The NKJV DELUXE READER’S BIBLE is meant to be read, I would not use it as a Bible study tool, nor would I take it to church with me. (By the time you find Jeremiah chapter 10 verse 5 service would be over.) This is the Bible to get if you want to read Scripture from Genesis to Revelations non-stop without having to read footnotes, commentary or look at pictures- there are none.

I wish I had had this Bible the first time I read Scripture from Genesis to Revelations. This will make a great gift if you do not keep it for yourself.                   Written by Marsha L F Randolph

NIV- THE WOMAN'S' STUDY BIBLE

RECEIVING GOD'S TRUTH FOR BALANCE, HOPE, AND TRANSFORMATION

How fascinating! As I opened the NIV, THE WOMAN’S STUDY BIBLE immidiately following the page used to place who “This Bible belongs to” on is “the Ketubah Marriage Contract”. As I went through the pages, looking for the introduction, I what was once part of many Bibles- “Family History” pages and something new “My Spiritual Mothers”. Wow! This makes this Bible worth buying as: a Bridal Shower gift, a Mother’s day gift, a sweet 16 gift, or a gift to yourself.

Today’s Bibles are more than just the presentation of Scripture and editiorials. They serve as introduction to biblical truths. The NIV, THE WOMAN’S STUDY BIBLE presents the Word from a feminine perspective, an important task considering societies push towards asexual identity ideologies.  This Bible celebrates being female.

Not all women in the Bible are as well known as Esther and Mary. There is the “Levite’s Defenseless Concubine” - Judges 19- her tragic story was discussed on page 380. A warning against paganism is found on page 1085, within as part of a discussion about Solomon: “In recent times, a renewed interest in paganism has arisen amoung many women”  and “Christian women must guard their hearts and minds against these influences.”  A commentary on Sapphira in the book of Acts, she was a deceptive woman who exprienced the consequences of her lie.

NIV, THE WOMAN’S STUDY BIBLE is filled with a wealth of information. The words included within the pages of God’s word are presented in such a way that the woman who reads it will grow. Without even getting into the actual word I learned something new, the Ketubah.

A Jewish marriage contract is called the Ketubah. The Ketubah is a binding document presented by the groom listing his responsiblities to his bride. “The rabbis extended the explicit Old Testament requirements of food, clothing,, and conjugal rights to include the demand that a husband respect his wife and not make her cry.” (See page follwing “the Keubah Marraige Contract”

It is a New International Verson Bible translation, those words are as they have benn.  Though I a NIV Bible, several in fact, I will not be able to give this one away! xxx written by Marsha L F Randolph

WHOLENESS by Toure Roberts

WHOLENESS Winning in Life from the Inside Out by Toure Roberts is a book worth reading. I was not going to read it because there was a forward by T. D. Jakes, I didn’t want more of the same. (Been there read that!) I chose to review it because I noticed no one else was- I often choose what no one else wants to read to review.

What makes WHOLENESS a good book is the concept is applicable in everyone’s life. We all reach a plateau in which we cannot seem to move forward but there does not seem to be a loically reason as to why. The issue, as the author explains, is not readily seen because it comes from within; it is not them it is you.

We all have life events that were unexplainable or unavoidable in which we can ignore. Often what we do is take the hurt or feelings of rejection and place it in a mental compartment deep within our souls. Like a missing piece of the puzzle that memory creates a void in our lives the author refers to it as brokenness.

WHOLENESS, is a easy to read book (I read it in a day) that systematically takes the reader from- how it happened to how to fix it. As easy as this book is to read for some people it might be hard to digest. This book, though autobiographical in nature, is about you the reader; don’t lie to yourself and think that it is not.

This is a healthy healing read.

Note: another reason I was reluctant to read this book is the authors’ face was on the cover, he looks to young to know about life. Change the cover and perhaps you would sell more books in a greater demographic- unless your target audience is Black males.    - -  written by Marsha L F Randolph

ADDENDUM: To my readers  my book MOVING FORWARD BY FAITH , published in 2011 and updated in 2016, addresses similar issues from a different perspective. Though the author says he is a church leader he does not use Scripture as the basis for his opinion I do.

NKJV FAITHLIFE ILLUSTRATED STUDY BIBLE published by Zondervan

Bibles are back! In this world of: Aps, on-line viewing, big screen on church walls, and audio versions that allow you to access Scripture, it is great to get a nice big fat old fashioned Bible. Zondervan publishing has released NKJV FAITHLIFE ILLUSTRATED STUDY BIBLE for those who not only want to read the Bible but study the 66 books.

“The Faithlife Illustrated Study Bible” helps remove the obstacles to understanding the Bible, so that people with any level of knowledge and experience can pursue an enriching study of Scripture.” (Editors Preface paragraph 3)

That is what a ‘study Bible’ should do and that is what the NKJV FAITHLIFE ILLUSTRATED STUDY BIBLE does. What I like about this Bible is the presentation of timelines, somehow they make more sense to me than I have found in other Bibles. Also the family trees and graphics of various structures are easy to examine and understand. The space dedicated to the various illustrations in this illustrated study Bible is what makes it worth the investment.

Years ago, when I first started reading Scripture, I did not want a Bible with commentary; they were not called ‘study’ Bibles back then. Study Bibles have come a long way and the NKJV FAITHLIFE ILLUSTRATED STUDY BIBLE is something I would recommend to a person who has never read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation before.

I am not going to say this is my new favorite as I have said with some reviews but this one is definately a keeper and a go to reference tool as I study God’s word.

DEVELOPING THE LEADER WITHIN YOU 2.0 by John C Maxwell

If you have never read a John C Maxwell book and you are interested in having your own business and / or improving upon your leadership skills then I recommend you read DEVELOPING THE LEADER WITHIN YOU 2.0. If you own more than 2 John C Maxwell books I would suggest you skip this book.

Though may be a few “nuggets” found within the pages of this book however as a fan of John C. Maxwell it grieves me to say DEVELOPING THE LEADER WITHIN YOU 2.O is more of the same. It seems that Mr. Maxwell is re-releasing his books with a slite twist and it is now to redundant for me to give him a pass. Perhaps he has said all that he has to say.

In the not so fine print on the cover it reads: “Over 2 Million Copies Sold (Original Edition)”.

If you have never read a Maxwell good then grab a copy. There are great tips on leadership including developing an understanding when the problem is not the other person but you- see chapter 5: Problem Solving. If you are determined to read this book even though you have read the others you will find some diffences and two chapters that have been omitted.

Book stores require I indicate how I like this book by assigning between 1 to 5 stars. On average I have given 5 stars to a John C Maxwell book. I cannot do it this time because if I had not received a complimentary copy I would not have purchased this book.   - - - written by Marsha L F Randolph

GOVERNMENT VS GOD by Fenton Ward

What I expected and what I read were not the same, but I don’t always read the subtitles when choosing a book for review. GOVERNMENT VS GOD,  Twenty-First Century Insights into Revelation, A First Century Riddle  by Fenton Ward is actually a study of the book of Revelation.

Chapter by Chapter GOVERNMENT VS GOD shares insight as to how what is going on in the world today has been written about in Scripture. Though it is easy to read it may not be easy to digest, those who are comfortable with the book of Revelation and have some knowledge as to what is going on in the world will have no difficulty getting through the almost 300 page text.

This book is a study- manual and not really something you would get for casual reading. Though I recomend it for reading, for me it took a while to get through it. But, whenever I read non-fiction I like to evaluate the truthfullness of what is being written, this takes time. Not only does the author reference other books in the Bible, which is expected, he also references non-biblical ideologies / philosophies such as Marxism.

This book is more important today than ever before since many individuals are embracing a marred presentation of what it means to be a follower of Christ.  GOVERENMENT VS GOD presents a systematic study of the world today by applying the book of Revelation to the modern Believer.    — written by Marsha L F Randolph

MUSLIM by Hank Hanegraaff

I had two preconceived notions prior to reading MUSLIM by Hank Hanegraaff. I read some of the reviews, something I rarely do, they were mixed and this swayed me to my second prejudice. One of my neighbors is a Muslim and I get along with his entire family very well. Even though I was skeptical about this book I felt it would be something important I needed to read.

Many Muslims are peaceful and tolerant; however, the history of Islam demonstrates conclusively that it is not a peaceful and tolerant religion.” This sentence found in the introduction(page xiv) help me to open my mind for what was to come.

There are 74 pages of notes, 188 pages of text. In addition there is a glossary of terms many have heard on the news as well as: a general index, Scripture index and a Qur’an index. The information presented is in a systematic way that will help the reader understand Islam, including who Muhammad is, and the significance of Sharia. If this is not enough there is also a suggested reading list of books for anyone who chooses to learn more.

This is an important read, particularly for Christians because as it states on the cover Islam is “The World’s Fastest-Growing Relgion.” I would suggest every Believer study their Bible of course but also “Know What You Need to Know About” what it means to be MUSLIM “The Worlds Fastest Growing Religion.”  — written by Marsha L F Randolph
