BIBLE GATEWAY- My review on its' updated website.

 

On July 1, 2020 I received a request to review BIBLE GATEWAY’s updated website. Bible Gateway has been my resource of choice for years even though many people and my church suggest another one. There was nothing wrong with the “classic” site but I decide to give it a try, that is why it has taken me this long to share my opinion.

I have been very irritated with the new site, I am glad it gives me the option of going tot he “classic” view because when I am studying it is important for me to utilize that view. 

Both sites offer the viewer the same thing it is just a matter of choosing a tab on the top of the page or a menu item on the side of the page. 

The classic is brighter, the fonts are lighter but all I want to do is go to my Bible verses.

I use BIBLE GATEWAY to view multiple translations of the same passages. I like to compare the new King James, The Expanded and the Voice- I have a print version of each of these Bibles but I will often add a translation that I don’t have. With the classic website, once I log on, the search tool automatically defaults to the new King James Bible Version and I can add the other two versions in the order that I mentioned. 

Since the update the default is the New International Version, yes I have this in print, I rarely seek the NIV translation. 

Now, it is possible that I could set up the New BIBLE GATEWAY website to accommodate my idiosyncrasies but why? My opinion, when I first looked at the updated site was: They are trying to compete with the other Bible search tools. 

Coca-cola tried to compete with Pepsi by coming up with a “New” Coke and it was not a success. Yes, there were people that liked the flavor but most people chose to stick with the classic. Not everyone is going to switch from Pepsi to coke just because you created a flavor that is similar.

Not everyone is going to come to the New Bible Gateway just because you redesigned your website. BIBLE GATEWAY is perfect for what people who study GOD’s word needs. Perhaps you may get a few new subscribers but as long as mega church leaders promote the other site people are not going to switch, your just aggravating the people who have been with you for years. 

As a #BibleGatewayParner I was informed that the new site has a responsive design (whatever that is) and is easily viewed on whatever format you are using- cell phone, tablet, computer, etcetera.  I did try to use my cell phone to look up a verse but I had the same problem I had before the revamp- let's just assume it is operator error.

I still love Bible Gateway and prefer it over the other Bible resource tools and recommend it to everyone. I prefer the Classic coca-cola and the classic Bible Gateway.

KJV MINISTER'S BIBLE published by Thomas Nelson

If you are looking for a gift for someone you know who is entering the field of pastoral services, Thomas Nelson has published a KJV MINISTER’S BIBLE that is perfect. The box that this particular soft leather feel Bible is in service as a great holder for such a wealth of information.

I remember years ago someone asking me to perform the wedding ceremony between her and her fiance, I refused because I knew they were not ready for a marriage. I was not equipped at the time to facilitate premarital counseling. One of the many helps this book includes is an outline for six pre-marriage counseling classes.

The KJV MINISTER’S BIBLE is first and foremost the King James Bible. Included between the two Covenants are what I would call ministerial cheat sheets: Resources for the Minister. The resource categories include:  Weddings, Funerals, Dedications, Baptism and the Lord’s Supper, Worship, and Pastoral Care. The section on weddings includes pre-marital counseling as I mentioned but vows as well. Pastoral Care includes: a Home Visitation Checklist, recommended Bible verses to read depending on the situation and of course a Prayer of Salvation.

The resource found within the Old and New Covenant is actually the Nelson’s Minister Manual. Whereas, a minister may own a Bible and the manual THE KJV MINISTER’S BIBLE is both which makes it worth the purchase and a great gift.

NKJV, DELUXE READER'S BIBLE

I did not know what to expect when I agreed to review Thomas Nelson’s NKJV DELUXE READER’S BIBLE. Upon arrival my first impression was how elegant the box is that the Bible is in. I equated the box that my cell phone came in except the Bible simply slid out, no need to open. I chose the cloth bound copy with a yellow spine and what they are calling gray but I say is golden/ grayish front and back cover. It also has two place mark ribbons, I have learned that one is not enough. Like many of Thomas Nelson’s Bibles the font is easy to read; so-far, so-good.

I have never read a “Readers Bible” before so it took a few minutes for me to adjust to the presentation of Scripture. I was not constantly reminded of what book I was reading, found in the header of the page on the left not on the opposite page. I had to look on the page to my left on the left column and the small red number to determine which chapter I was in and look in the folds for the numbers written in black to determine, generally speaking, which verse I was reading. The NKJV DELUXE READER’S BIBLE is as close as I have gotten to reading actual scrolls.

This is a Bible to be read as a letter should be read. It is presented as a book should be written.  The NKJV DELUXE READER’S BIBLE is meant to be read, I would not use it as a Bible study tool, nor would I take it to church with me. (By the time you find Jeremiah chapter 10 verse 5 service would be over.) This is the Bible to get if you want to read Scripture from Genesis to Revelations non-stop without having to read footnotes, commentary or look at pictures- there are none.

I wish I had had this Bible the first time I read Scripture from Genesis to Revelations. This will make a great gift if you do not keep it for yourself.                   Written by Marsha L F Randolph

NIV- THE WOMAN'S' STUDY BIBLE

         RECEIVING GOD'S TRUTH FOR BALANCE, HOPE, AND TRANSFORMATION

How fascinating! As I opened the NIV, THE WOMAN’S STUDY BIBLE immidiately following the page used to place who “This Bible belongs to” on is “the Ketubah Marriage Contract”. As I went through the pages, looking for the introduction, I what was once part of many Bibles- “Family History” pages and something new “My Spiritual Mothers”. Wow! This makes this Bible worth buying as: a Bridal Shower gift, a Mother’s day gift, a sweet 16 gift, or a gift to yourself.

Today’s Bibles are more than just the presentation of Scripture and editiorials. They serve as introduction to biblical truths. The NIV, THE WOMAN’S STUDY BIBLE presents the Word from a feminine perspective, an important task considering societies push towards asexual identity ideologies.  This Bible celebrates being female.

Not all women in the Bible are as well known as Esther and Mary. There is the “Levite’s Defenseless Concubine” - Judges 19- her tragic story was discussed on page 380. A warning against paganism is found on page 1085, within as part of a discussion about Solomon: “In recent times, a renewed interest in paganism has arisen amoung many women”  and “Christian women must guard their hearts and minds against these influences.”  A commentary on Sapphira in the book of Acts, she was a deceptive woman who exprienced the consequences of her lie.

NIV, THE WOMAN’S STUDY BIBLE is filled with a wealth of information. The words included within the pages of God’s word are presented in such a way that the woman who reads it will grow. Without even getting into the actual word I learned something new, the Ketubah.

A Jewish marriage contract is called the Ketubah. The Ketubah is a binding document presented by the groom listing his responsiblities to his bride. “The rabbis extended the explicit Old Testament requirements of food, clothing,, and conjugal rights to include the demand that a husband respect his wife and not make her cry.” (See page follwing “the Keubah Marraige Contract”

NKJV FAITHLIFE ILLUSTRATED STUDY BIBLE published by Zondervan

Bibles are back! In this world of: Aps, on-line viewing, big screen on church walls, and audio versions that allow you to access Scripture, it is great to get a nice big fat old fashioned Bible. Zondervan publishing has released NKJV FAITHLIFE ILLUSTRATED STUDY BIBLE for those who not only want to read the Bible but study the 66 books.

“The Faithlife Illustrated Study Bible” helps remove the obstacles to understanding the Bible, so that people with any level of knowledge and experience can pursue an enriching study of Scripture.” (Editors Preface paragraph 3)

That is what a ‘study Bible’ should do and that is what the NKJV FAITHLIFE ILLUSTRATED STUDY BIBLE does. What I like about this Bible is the presentation of timelines, somehow they make more sense to me than I have found in other Bibles. Also the family trees and graphics of various structures are easy to examine and understand. The space dedicated to the various illustrations in this illustrated study Bible is what makes it worth the investment.

Years ago, when I first started reading Scripture, I did not want a Bible with commentary; they were not called ‘study’ Bibles back then. Study Bibles have come a long way and the NKJV FAITHLIFE ILLUSTRATED STUDY BIBLE is something I would recommend to a person who has never read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation before.

I am not going to say this is my new favorite as I have said with some reviews but this one is definately a keeper and a go to reference tool as I study God’s word.

NKJV STUDY BIBLE FOR KIDS published by TOMMY NELSON

The NKJV STUDY BIBLE FOR KIDS published by  THOMAS “TOMMY” NELSON is presented specifically for children ages 8-12 (note: I do not particularly care for the word “Kids”.)  A New King James Bible translation with study notes, it is unique because of the presentation of color and the commentary which targets young people.

 I like the study emphasis that are presented in the “Spotlight”  sections that encourage the reader to: Read it, Get it, Live it. There are also text blocks that present: “Epic Ideas”  and calls to “Action.” All of the text box / commentaries have a movie theme icon assocated with it even the “In Focus” text blocks, which are short one or two sentence statements.

As far as Bibles go, for young men and women it is good. The commentaries are written so as to not overwhelm the reader with college level terms but not insulting to the mind of a 14 year old, though the target reader is 8-12. The dictionary -concordance in the back of the book has words in it that shed light as to how to pronounce many of the names found in the Bible.  Also note worthy, the introduction to each book is brief, to the point and easy to grasp.

NKJV UNAPOLOGETIC STUDY BIBLE - Thomas Nelson publishers

Reviewers bias: I love Bibles and I love the New King James Bible and I have declared the last few Bibles as my “new favorite Bible.”  But this is the BIBLE I NEED!

Thomas Nelson has presented many Bibles with commentaries and references the NKJV UNAPOLOGETIC STUDY BIBLE has become my most relevant Scripture source in addressing today’s issues.

NKJV UNAPOLOGETIC STUDY BIBLE- Confidence For Such A Time As This (the complete title) focuses on eight specific areas of study: Church, Corruption, Economics, Education, Family, Government, Sanctity of Life and Virtue. Within each of these areas of study there are commentaries.

Ecclesiastes 9:9 could lead to a discussion on marriage. In this case there is a commentary on: THE MYTHS OF COHABITATION, found on page 724 of my Hard cover copy. This discussion is  in the area of Family,  and addresses Adultery and Fornication by sharing 4 myths living together.

This Bible is not for the “Sunday Only Christian” using it will push you further away from worldly living into the Kingdom of God. No modern day issue is avoided in this Bible. Sanctity of Life addresses the issues of abortion and infanticide. A biblical perspective of homosexuality and transgenderism are also presentend.

In addition to the areas of study there are also what is refered to as quadrants. These four quadrants: Biblical, Historical, Quotation & Writings and Commentary help put the writings in perspective. For example: Psalm 139:13-16 There is an Article “Embryonic Stem-cells: Fearfully and Wonderfully made. This is under the area of “Sanctity of Life”, it is undeer the subcatagory of “Stem-Cell research, Cloning and Biotechnogolgy. Psalm 139:13-16 has been placed in the QUADRANT- BIBLICAL. With this Bible you will want to take full advantage of the INDEX FOR CANONICAL STUDY, which is what I did to find and present this example.

THIS IS A SERIOUS STUDY BIBLE MEANT FOR THOSE SERIOUS ABOUT KNOWING THE WILL OF GOD. (All caps intentional.) It will challenge your theology. This Bible was published for such a time as this.

THE KING JAMES STUDY BIBLE - FULL COLOR EDITION

At this point in my life I can say that I have every translation of a Bible that I want. Now when I obtain a new Bible it is for the additional information provided thus the presentation of Thomas Nelson’s latest contribution to the Bible Geeks of the world: “THE KING JAMES VERSION STUDY BIBLE, FULL COLOR EDITION” really intrigued me.

It is interesting to note that I have recently decided to go back to the basics of Scripture reading which includes reading the King James more than the New King James version of the Bible.

 There are four aspects of this Bible I am looking at: graphics, commentary, cross reference, and of course readability.

I think most of us take the maps for granted and a picture here and there throughout a Bible is a bonus. The images in THE KING JAMES VERSION BIBLE, is truly more than what I was expecting. Archeological finds, pictures that relate to the text and of course the maps. The images definately help make the text relevant.

The comments found at the bottom of the page help put various passages in context by defining various words. They also present information to help the reader understand the relevance to what was written.

Finally it is good to know  that in this version of The KING JAMES VERSION STUDY BIBLE Cross reference are available for various verses. There are also alternative translations of words or phrases.  A bonus is the Hebrew and Greek names of God found in the comment section.

This is by far the best Bible ever! (I might have said that before but it really is good.) Though I often give away the Bibles I review this one is definately a keeper / user. I love it.   - -  written by Marsha L F Randolph

NIV KIDS VISUAL STUDY BIBLE

It just so happens that I received my copy of NIV KIDS VISUAL STUDY BIBLE as I was getting ready to study my Sabbath School lesson- so I used it. Of course Zondervan published this Bible for children between the ages of 8 to 12 but God’s word is God’s word.

The assumption is that around 8 years of age young people should be able to read God’s word and not an overview as you see with many children’s Bible. The NIV KIDS VISUAL STUDY BIBLE is a graduation of sorts for many young people however the pictures make it fun and the explanations / commentaries were easy to understand.

As I said, I was using the Bible to do my own Bible Study so I went to Judges 4-6, which is what we were studying. Within the Bible each page has two columns one white and one golden yellow. Scripture is written on the inner white column while commentary and pictures are on the outer yellow column. On page 360 there was a picture of a man leading two oxen attached to a cart and underneath was a comment regarding Judges 4:1-2:

“How the Lord “sold” his people The Lord “sold them” by allowing a pagan tribe to defeat Israel and make them slaves to Jabin.” 

I knew that but I didn’t know that! This explanation brought clarity to a verse that I have often read but rarely meditated on.

Another example of what I learned: A few weeks ago I was on Facebook and one of my FBFs called someone a Leviathan. Well I did look it up in my Bible however I was it again in the NIV KIDS VISUAL STUDY BIBLE. Isaiah 27:1 note:

Leviathan This was a mthological sea monster. Here, it is a symbol of wicked nations such as Egypt. 

Why is this important? Because this study Bible is designed for children but it is actually informative enough that grown-ups could use it. Yes; there are tables, charts and maps. This is indeed a great Bible.

KJV, THINLINE BIBLE -COMPACT

Not everyone considers a compact Bible when they seek to purchase one and today more people are dependent on electronics to make a Bible available when they need one. But for those individuals, such as myself, who feel the importance of having a tangible form of Scripture Thomas Nelsons’ KJV, THINLINE COMPACT BIBLE is a viable option.

Admittedly, the main problem with compact Bibles is the size of the print. (If you have read any of my reviews you know this is a biggie for me!) And the font size is definitely small in the KJV, THINLINE COMPACT BIBLE, but I can read everything with my glasses on even the maps. That is because this Bible is set with the “Thomas Nelson KJV Font” a typeset created specifically for Thomas Nelson for the Bibles they publish; in other words even though the print size is small the words are still easy to read.

This is straight Bible- no commentary, no cross references, no profound words of encouragement scattered throughout the pages but Jesus words are in red. There are 8 maps, a one year Bible reading plan and a “30 DAYS WITH JESUS” passage reading plan. I found the “introduction” very interesting. It seems to set the right tone for the reading of God’s word.

 “To the most High and Mighty Prince James by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France, Ireland, Defender of the Faith, &C.

Why would anyone purchase the KJV, THINLINE BIBLE Compact edition? Because it is portable you can take it where ever you go. It is dependable, it does not need batteries or a charger. It is convenient you can keep it at your bedside or on your desk at work without taking up a lot of space. And, because everyone should have a Bible when they go to church even if the words are on the screen. However with this particular Bible, the KJV, THINLINE BIBLE compact edition, it is bound in cloth and looks beautiful. (Did I mention it has two ribbon page keepers?

THE WOMAN'S STUDY BIBLE NKJV

What a beautiful Mother’s Day gift THE WOMAN’S STUDY BIBLE NKJV, published by Thomas Nelson, would make. As I glanced through it’s pages I began to come up with excuses as to why I should keep this one for myself but as with most of the books I review it will be given away.

I did not have a first impression with THE WOMAN’S STUDY BIBLE because I had multiple impressions all at once. The floral cover appealed to the softer side of me, technically it is a cloth cover board with a pink floral design and it’s content sold me on this New King James Bible’s usefulness.

As I look at the various notations through out the book I am impressed with the information presented. On page 358 for example the topic block is: “Israels Unfaithfulness to God.” There is a comparison of Israel’s God vs Pagan gods,”  and “Worshipers “Of Israel God” vs “Of Pagan gods.”

As a test of the content I wanted to know what was written about Deborah, since she is one of my favorite people in Scripture. My thought was if they did not mention her it is not a real study Bible. On page 362 a mini-bio of Deborah was written and on page 363 Jael was discussed -double wow.

There are a lot of positive attributes within the pages of this Bible and I could write many more words but there are some technical factors that are important that need to be mentioned. First, and very important to me, it is written in LARGE PRINT! Yea! There is an INDEX at the back of the book - a Reference Guide to the Special Features which is helpful. And of course there are MAPS; the maps are readable and found at the back of the book as well as throughout the Bible.

Did you know that Aloe is mentioned in the Bible twice. The reader can learn about various herbs mentioned in the Word of God in THE WOMAN’S STUDY BIBLE NKJV. This book is full of little treasures.

This Bible has a lot to offer anyone looking for a New King James Version study Bible.  Written by Marsha L F Randolph

KJV THINLINE BIBLE, LARGE PRINT CLOTH OVERBOARD

Thomas Nelson has just released The King James Version Bible. “Oh!” You might be saying. “They always put out King James Bible, I have one.” But what you do not have is a: KJV THINLINE BIBLE,  Large Print Cloth Cover board in Black/ Gray Red letter edition. And if you like taking your Bible with you to church, or when you visit then you want this. This edition also comes in a green cloth cover, which looks cute but I like this one.

I can tell you that it really is cloth! I got the black part dirty and had to clean it with a damp cloth.

This King James Bible has a classic look to it. I like the weight and its’ clean, nothing fancy, cover. When you open the book the first page is the standard presentation page: to, from etcetera. As you open it up to the books of the Bible you can actually see the words, the font is great. No, I cannot read it without my glasses but I can hold the Book at a reasonable distance and still see the words. What I really appreciate is the ability to actually read the maps! 

I don’t recall other large print Bibles having maps in which you could read all of the places. (Again, no squinty eyes.)

An important note at the back of the book: “The Bible was set in the Thomas Nelson KJV Font, a typeface commissioned by Thomas Nelson Publishers and designed in Aarhus by Klaus Krogh and Heidi Rand Sorensons of 2K/DENMARK.”  Yes, this is a unique font for a very special book and I for one am glad.

This is a very readable King James Version of the Bible that is not oversized.  xxx Marsha L F Randolph

KJV WORD STUDY BIBLE

In the year 2017 there are Bible purest who will only read a King James Bible translation, I am not one of them. However, I do love the King James version of the Bible and it is with great excitement that I am reviewing the KJV WORD STUDY BIBLE. Thomas Nelson Publisher.

My first impression is that it is a beautiful imitation leather Bible. The weight would make it prohibitive to carry around but the print is definitely readable, even the notes use a font that is pleasant to the eye.

Word study Bibles are excellent and for beginners the KJV WORD STUDY BIBLE might be worth owning. However, if you are have ever owned a Thompson chain study Bible you will be disappointed with this; the word study is not as extensive.

Let’s use the book of John as an example:

• There is not the usual book over view that you find in most study Bibles. The brief introduction skims through what the reader can expect. No historical perspective.
• The “WATCH WORDS” ARE- word, love, miracle, know see; the definitions do not reflect what you would find in a concordance. 
• Some of the words underlined in the chapter include: darkness, witness, flesh, dwelt, only begotten, glory; I am sure there are more. 

So what do you do with these words? Within the book there are text boxes with notes on a specific word. As I read the comments for “only begotten”  I can see how this explanation could lead to confusion.

As I have written, the KJV WORD STUDY BIBLE is good for a person new to Bible study but may create some frustration to an advanced Bible study. The words in this Bible are useless to me personally but might help if I was looking for a subject to teach.

It must be noted that I usually study from the New King James Bible however I often revert back to the King James Bible when doing word study. Not everyone loves the King James Version of the Bible many choose the New King James but if you are, or know someone who is a King James kind of person it is still a good Bible to have, if for no other reason because of the font size. And, yes, it is a good gift idea!

As we get closer to the Resurrection season AKA Easter more Bibles will be available for you to chose from. Bibles make great Baptismal gifts, they are an excellent choice for a person who has graduated from Bible school and they are an excellent wedding present especially if the couples name is engraved on it - I received one and it is cherished.

AMERICAN WOMAN'S BIBLE - NKJV published by Thomas Nelson

OMM! If ever there was a reason for a Bible junkie to buy another Bible the AMERICAN WOMAN’S BIBLE - NKJV is as good a reason as others. I received deliver of the NKJV AMERICAN WOMAN’S BIBLE - Women, Godly Virtues, and the Making of America earlier than expected but when I opened the box and saw it I canceled all of my plans just so I could at least flip through some of the pages.

The Bible is HIS-story, the AMERICAN WOMAN’S BIBLE is history as it relates to women the combination of the two makes a great study.

• Throughout the Bible there are inserts which discuss America’s history. The chapter/topics are: 
• Women of Early America- Colonial Times Until the Revolutionary War
• Women of the American Revolution - The Nation is Born
• Women of the Civil War - The Abolition of Slavery
• Women of World War I - The Great War

This is a New King James Bible. The beginning of each book contains the author, date, setting, theme and insights. As with many Bibles cross references and translation notes are  present- bottom right of each page. The Font is a good is easy to read. In addition the value based commentary on specific verses are based on the following topics: Bravery, Challenge, Commitment, Compassion Concern, Courage, Creativity, Dedication, Devotion, Dignity, Diligence, Duty, Faith, Faithfulness, Forgiveness, Generosity Honor, Hope, Hopefulness, Hospitality, Humility, Influence, Inspiration, Integrity, Joyfulness, Justice, Kindheartedness, Kindness Knowledge, Leadership, Love, Loyalty, Mercy, Obedience, Perseverance, Persistence, Poise, Prayerfulness, Resourcefulness, Righteousness Sacrifice, Service, Steadfastness, Strength, Submission, Sympathy, Teaching, Testing, Thankfulness, Trials, Trust, Truth Unknown, Victory, Wisdom and  Worship.

If Thomas Nelson continues to produce Bibles that are true to God’s word and include such information as what is found in the AMERICAN WOMAN’S BIBLE all I can say is clean off the bookshelf! I recommend you purchase this Bible not only because it is a NKJV (my favorite translation) but is shares such a great history of American women.

NKJV STUDY BIBLE- PERSONAL SIZE

There was a time in which everyone carried a Bible to church and then many churches started showing the Bible verses on a big screen. Today many people have a Bible as an application on their cell phone or they bring a tablet or ipad to church. I have a Bible on my cell phone, lap top and even on the tablet I owned before it died. BUT my favorite Bibles I have in print form including the NKJV STUDY BIBLE published by Thomas Nelson. Last year I started carrying this very thick Bible to church with me.

It is important that we get into the habit of reading and studying the Bible the old fashioned way.  In the event that there is no internet or electricity you can still read the Word. In addition it is good when to personalize the Word with your own notes, underlines and highlights that you can review later.

Since I already have a NKJV STUDY BIBLE to those who do not appreciate owning a print Bible it does not make sense to want to review the NKJV STUDY BIBLE - PERSONAL SIZE.  To a Bible junkie (there are a lot of us out there) you can never own to many Bibles and every Bible has a purpose. For me I would prefer to be able to throw my NKJV Bible in my purse taking it with me where ever I go: church, doctors’ office, vacation, or visiting someone who may need to hear the word.

The NKJV STUDY BIBLE -PERSONAL SIZE is like its’ standard size Bible a ‘complete resource for studying God’s word” only smaller. It has the same number of pages thus every chapter and every verse page are the same. Maps, images and other inserts are in color just as the standard sized Bible. The two differences are the size though it is almost the same thickness and the font size. The font is readable with my glasses on. In terms of fitting in my purse- it does- I carry a medium size purse.

I own pocket sized Bibles this one is considerably bigger (5 1/4x8x 2); it is ‘personal’ Sized not pocket sized.  Of course I recommend this Bible.

THE WORD OF PROMISE NEW TESTAMENT -AUDIO NKJV BIBLE

I am going to assume that many people are reading this review have never read one of my reviews.
I love Bibles I do not like recorded translations. I have Bibles on CD and listened to a few recorded versions. I gave away a very expensive Bible on CD that included the Old and New Testament. When the opportunity to review THE WORD OF PROMISE - NEW TESTAMENT audio NKJV Bible I hesitated before agreeing to listen.

My first impression: great packaging; it will fit on my bookshelf beside my other Bibles very well!

THE WORD OF PROMISE NEW TESTAMENT - AUDIO NKJV BIBLE  is released by Thomas Nelson;  CD produced by Jim Cavizel and Raymond Arroyo, produced by Carl Amari. It is truly a production.

As I listened to the CD I became irritated with the background music that seem to overpower the words. Then I listened to the character of Jesus- I was not impressed. I did like the narrator.

What is good the pace of the dialog is easy to read along. I would not discourage anyone from purchasing this CD set because I know I can be a Bible snob and I would purchase this as a gift for a friend who has never read the Bible before.

This is the New King James Translation of the Bible and as I said a person can read along or just listen. One chapter per track makes it easy to listen at your own pace, and the list price is very reasonable. BUY IT- I recommend it despite my prejudices.  Xxx MARSHA L F RANDOLPH

NIV BIBLE FOR MEN published by Zondervan

Obviously I did no get this Bible for me and the men in my family, even my young grandson, have Bibles. I chose to review NIV BIBLE FOR MEN because there are not to many Bibles of note that are dedicated to men. This being the Christmas season I am sure quite a few people will be purchasing a Bible as a gift.

I have read the NIV Bible from Genesis to Revelation in the past so when I received the NIV BIBLE FOR MEN published by ZONDERVAN I wanted to see what type of extras there were. My first impression: this is a great Bible and I do recommend it, not just for men. Why?

Within this particular Bible are 260 Daily Readings a life application reading presented by various Pastors, most of whom I have not heard of.  Conceptually one reading could be read Monday through Friday in addition to a persons reading for the day. These readings are placed strategically to compliment what is read for example Genesis chapter 15 discusses God’s promise to Abram for a son and we know that Abram impregnated Sarai’s maid this was not God’s plan. On page 20  the daily reading (D5) shared
by  Halim Suh Pastor of Equipping at the Stone Community Church in Austin Texas contribution we find:

 “Living the gap between promises and reality’
“Key Verse: Genesis 15:6”
“Understand the context Genesis 15”
 “Even though we know that God is present and all-powerful, it’s often hard to trust him during the tough times in life.”   

This is followed by an elaboration of this introductory sentence and concludes with a test box entitled- “Bring it to Lif
e”
These presentations not only introduce the world to leaders within the church community that are not as well known as others but teach biblical principles to men of God.

Once a week the reader is introduced to a concept that many believe but are false. 52 Myths that look at unhealthy behaviors and beliefs specifically accepted by men. (In looking at the myths I know must women do not believe they are true.) For example: Myth #2 Living together can help you avoid big trouble down the road. (Page 84) Myth #34 My anger is justified. (page 1104) Did I say these myths do not apply to the way women think?

NIV BIBLE FOR MEN is an excellent Bible for men of all ages however it is definitely something women can read and appreciate. I would suggest purchasing this Bible for yourself, if you are a man, for your fiance’, for your father,, for your sons, for your husband or any other man who wants to discover how relevant God’s word is today.  —Marsha L Randolph

NIV UNDERSTAND THE FAITH STUDY BIBLE pubished by Zondervan

As Christmas time and New Years Day draws near there are many people who consider purchasing a Bible as a gift or for personal use. There was a time in which I always recommended first time Bible readers start with a New King James Bible without the commentaries; yes, I was a Bible purist-sort of. Now I recommend people get a Study Bible particularly if it is your intent to read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation.

The NIV UNDERSTAND THE FAITH STUDY BIBLE published by Zondervan, released just in time for your holiday gift giving, is a Bible you should really consider purchasing as a gift or for your Bible reading pleasures.

In addition to containing the most recent updates for the New International Version of the Bible the NIV UNDERSTAND THE FAITH STUDY BIBLE assist the reader in applying the word to their everyday life. By including such features as “Everyday Faith Devotionals,” Culture Connections Articles,” as well as charts, graphs and a concordance there is more than enough information to help a person study.

One of the features that I liked was the “Doctrine 101 Articles” that examines foundational beliefs of Christians. But, church doctrines are also discussed  in the section “Everyday Faith” as well as other articles found throughout the book. I really appreciated the Glossary of Theological Terms- I would buy this Bible just to be able to understand words used in Christiandom that I did not fully understand.

Unlike other study Bibles NIV UNDERSTAND THE FAITH STUDY BIBLE contains more “ohhhhhh” information. The articles explain why we believe what we believe and when you read Scripture the coincides with the article you will have that ah-hah moment in which you will simply say to yourself “Ohhhhhh, now I understand.”

There are a lot of Bibles on the market and I am beginning to sound like a broken record recommending everyone that I review. The NIV UNDERSTAND THE FAITH STUDY BIBLE is worth buying as a gift and using for personal use because it will help you grow and understand what faith is all about.  xxx Marsha

KJV FOUNDATION STUDY BIBLE

Without my great great grandmother I would not be here and without the  King James Version (KJV) of the Bible the other translations may not have existed. No matter how many different translations of the Bible there may be I think everyone should read the KJV of the Bible at least once.


Of the many Bibles available Thomas Nelson has a KJV FOUNDATION STUDY BIBLE that is perfect for anyone who wants to read this particular translation. It includes: cross-references, study noes, maps and a concordance; of course the words of Jesus are in red. I was looking for a King James Bible because I wanted to go back to basics.

With most Bibles that are published today the deciding factor as to what makes it good for you is what is highlighted. The KJV FOUNDATION STUDY BIBLE uses section headings to draw the readers attention to a particular theme, for example: the heading for Isaiah 48:1-8 is “Israel’s Obstinate Nature.”
THE KJV FOUNDATION STUDY BIBLE makes it easy for the individual to learn precepts and principles in Scripture without the assistance of a theologian.

As part of my personal Bible Study reading the Bible from Genesis to Revelations but not in a year as many do. I have read those other translations and I decided they were cute but I love the old way better. There is a NKJV Foundation Bible but I will be using the KJV FOUNDATION STUDY BIBLE as my cross reference book, NKJV is the primary read. I like the format for this book witch includes the cross references together in a text box on the bottom right corner of the page. And I cannot complain about the font which is readable no matter which glasses I use.

The KJV FOUNDATION STUDY BIBLE is an excellent investment and I recommend it.

NIrV GIANT PRINT HOLY BIBLE - Zondervan Publishers

I can see! When I opened up the NIrV GIANT PRINT HOLY BIBLE published by Zondervan I was amazed to see “super sized” fonts!
I had heard of, and have several versions of the NIV Bible but never had I heard of the New International Reader’s Version Bible. Promoted as a Bible that is not only easy to read like the NIV but easy to read and understand no matter who is reading it. This is important because many people skip the introduction which contains valuable information regarding how this particular translation was written and notes regarding particular verses.
Did you know that some verses are not included in various translations because some of the original translations did not have them?
Whereas many Bibles have a concordance in the back the NIrV GIANT PRINT HOLY BIBLE has a dictionary which though is not extensive does carry basic definition that are important for Believers to know.  Instead of a Topical Index there is a list of  150 famous Bible Stories.

I chose to read various Scriptures that are often quoted and familiar. This included: Psalm 23 and 91, Proverbs 31, Matthew 6:33 (my favorite verse) Hebrews 11 and lastly Genesis 1. In comparison with its’ counter the NIV Bible the words are not the same, it is even more simplistic.

Part of the beauty of the Bible is the poetic flow of the words. Unfortunately in making the book a much easier read it takes away from some of the majesty. For example we can read in Psalms 23:1: “The Lord is my Shepherd. He gives me everything I need.”  Though this is what ‘the Lord is my Shepherd I shall not want’ means there is a difference.

I think this is a good Bible and if you or someone you know has a desire to read the Bible but lack the motivation to read a more traditional translation the NIrV GIANT PRINT HOLY BIBLE is worth it. My only hope is that after reading this translation the individual would eventually advance to one of the not so simplistic version. I do recommend this Bible, if for no other reason the font is excellent.
