AGAINST ALL ODDS by Sheila Hodges

In order to appreciate AGAINST ALL ODDS by Sheila Hodges one must have gone through so much pain that you do not have time for technical or sophisticated words. Thus this book is not for everyone- only those who are in the midst of pain.

I know the author personally, I was truly hesitant about reviewing this book because I did not want to give my friend a bad review- if it is bad I will say so. I believe everything has a time and it was time for me to read and review AGAINST ALL ODDS. I had witnessed her passion in writing and promoting this book, I know the love of God’s children that motivated her to take the time to write and so I sat down one day when the house was quiet with a cup of coffee and McDonald’s hotcakes and sausage breakfast and began to read.

Written in a narrative form from a Christian perspective AGAINST ALL ODDS it is only 41 pages. A professional would say she jumps from subject to subject. A person who was not ready to deal with his or her pain would declare the book does not make sense but the book is good. Sheila Hodges, who has a Masters Degree and a host of other business and theological credentials writes as she speaks; there is no room for misinterpretation.

Woven within the narrative of this pseudo-biography are life nuggets and seeds of faith implanted by the word of God. The main character “Wanda” did not have an easy life but she had hope which is the on going thing of this novella.

AGAINST ALL ODDS is a story of one woman who overcame abuse and is living a God centered life. The context in which the book is presented makes it ideal for a person who is going through or gone through a very difficult time. It is clearly not a book for everyone, but if you have a friend who is hurting it is worth the read. Xxx Marsha L F Randolph

THE WORD OF PROMISE NEW TESTAMENT -AUDIO NKJV BIBLE

I am going to assume that many people are reading this review have never read one of my reviews.
I love Bibles I do not like recorded translations. I have Bibles on CD and listened to a few recorded versions. I gave away a very expensive Bible on CD that included the Old and New Testament. When the opportunity to review THE WORD OF PROMISE - NEW TESTAMENT audio NKJV Bible I hesitated before agreeing to listen.

My first impression: great packaging; it will fit on my bookshelf beside my other Bibles very well!

THE WORD OF PROMISE NEW TESTAMENT - AUDIO NKJV BIBLE  is released by Thomas Nelson;  CD produced by Jim Cavizel and Raymond Arroyo, produced by Carl Amari. It is truly a production.

As I listened to the CD I became irritated with the background music that seem to overpower the words. Then I listened to the character of Jesus- I was not impressed. I did like the narrator.

What is good the pace of the dialog is easy to read along. I would not discourage anyone from purchasing this CD set because I know I can be a Bible snob and I would purchase this as a gift for a friend who has never read the Bible before.

This is the New King James Translation of the Bible and as I said a person can read along or just listen. One chapter per track makes it easy to listen at your own pace, and the list price is very reasonable. BUY IT- I recommend it despite my prejudices.  Xxx MARSHA L F RANDOLPH

NIV BIBLE FOR MEN published by Zondervan

Obviously I did no get this Bible for me and the men in my family, even my young grandson, have Bibles. I chose to review NIV BIBLE FOR MEN because there are not to many Bibles of note that are dedicated to men. This being the Christmas season I am sure quite a few people will be purchasing a Bible as a gift.

I have read the NIV Bible from Genesis to Revelation in the past so when I received the NIV BIBLE FOR MEN published by ZONDERVAN I wanted to see what type of extras there were. My first impression: this is a great Bible and I do recommend it, not just for men. Why?

Within this particular Bible are 260 Daily Readings a life application reading presented by various Pastors, most of whom I have not heard of.  Conceptually one reading could be read Monday through Friday in addition to a persons reading for the day. These readings are placed strategically to compliment what is read for example Genesis chapter 15 discusses God’s promise to Abram for a son and we know that Abram impregnated Sarai’s maid this was not God’s plan. On page 20  the daily reading (D5) shared
by  Halim Suh Pastor of Equipping at the Stone Community Church in Austin Texas contribution we find:
“Living the gap between promises and reality’
“Key Verse: Genesis 15:6”
“Understand the context Genesis 15”
“Even though we know that God is present and all-powerful, it’s often hard to trust him during the tough times in life.”
This is followed by an elaboration of this introductory sentence and concludes with a test box entitled- “Bring it to Lif
e”
These presentations not only introduce the world to leaders within the church community that are not as well known as others but teach biblical principles to men of God.

Once a week the reader is introduced to a concept that many believe but are false. 52 Myths that look at unhealthy behaviors and beliefs specifically accepted by men. (In looking at the myths I know must women do not believe they are true.) For example: Myth #2 Living together can help you avoid big trouble down the road. (Page 84) Myth #34 My anger is justified. (page 1104) Did I say these myths do not apply to the way women think?

NIV BIBLE FOR MEN is an excellent Bible for men of all ages however it is definitely something women can read and appreciate. I would suggest purchasing this Bible for yourself, if you are a man, for your fiance’, for your father,, for your sons, for your husband or any other man who wants to discover how relevant God’s word is today.  —Marsha L Randolph

PEDAL by Louis K Lowy

It is rare that I get to review fiction that actually interest me, which is probably why I don’t review fiction to often. I agreed to review PEDAL when I met the author before I knew what the book was about, this never happens! After I received PEDAL by Louis K Lowy with nothing to do I decided to glance at the first few pages- LOL! I was hooked.
The plot is very simple, main character meets adversity, which should make the story easy to follow except the book is not really about adversity it is about achieving victory. PEDAL by Louis K Lowy is about finding a way to get passed unplanned unexpected difficulties by coming out of your comfort zone.
If I had read the description of this book found on Amazon I would have passed on the book. It has a lot of catchy words like” single, romance, and female; but the book is not a romance novel and it the main character could have been a man with a brother who experienced a bad relationship. Being a forty-nine year old teacher who has been fired is significant but not an unrecoverable life event. However, what makes things difficult for the main character Joanne and most people today is other people, a concept many readers are dealing with in their own lives. It is the family dynamics within the novel that will bond the reader with the writings.  How do you deal with your problems when other people have opinions of who you are and what you should be doing?
I recommend PEDAL, a good motivational read on how to overcome difficulties by facing your past and pushing yourself into the future. As you take the journey from trouble to triumph with the main character you will be encouraged. Success comes when you pedal forward even when you don’t feel like it.

NIV UNDERSTAND THE FAITH STUDY BIBLE pubished by Zondervan

As Christmas time and New Years Day draws near there are many people who consider purchasing a Bible as a gift or for personal use. There was a time in which I always recommended first time Bible readers start with a New King James Bible without the commentaries; yes, I was a Bible purist-sort of. Now I recommend people get a Study Bible particularly if it is your intent to read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation.

The NIV UNDERSTAND THE FAITH STUDY BIBLE published by Zondervan, released just in time for your holiday gift giving, is a Bible you should really consider purchasing as a gift or for your Bible reading pleasures.

In addition to containing the most recent updates for the New International Version of the Bible the NIV UNDERSTAND THE FAITH STUDY BIBLE assist the reader in applying the word to their everyday life. By including such features as “Everyday Faith Devotionals,” Culture Connections Articles,” as well as charts, graphs and a concordance there is more than enough information to help a person study.

One of the features that I liked was the “Doctrine 101 Articles” that examines foundational beliefs of Christians. But, church doctrines are also discussed  in the section “Everyday Faith” as well as other articles found throughout the book. I really appreciated the Glossary of Theological Terms- I would buy this Bible just to be able to understand words used in Christiandom that I did not fully understand.

Unlike other study Bibles NIV UNDERSTAND THE FAITH STUDY BIBLE contains more “ohhhhhh” information. The articles explain why we believe what we believe and when you read Scripture the coincides with the article you will have that ah-hah moment in which you will simply say to yourself “Ohhhhhh, now I understand.”

There are a lot of Bibles on the market and I am beginning to sound like a broken record recommending everyone that I review. The NIV UNDERSTAND THE FAITH STUDY BIBLE is worth buying as a gift and using for personal use because it will help you grow and understand what faith is all about.  xxx Marsha

NKJV PROPHECY STUDY BIBLE John Hagee General Editior

Generally speaking most people will purchase a standard Bible without a commentary or they will ignore the commentaries that are a part of the book. People who intentionally purchase study Bibles, Bibles with: comments, cross references, historical data and other advance information do so because of the additional information. The problem then becomes which of the many study Bibles available do you choose.

The NKJV PROPHECY STUDY BIBLE , John Hagee General Editor; is the newest edition of study Bibles in the Thomas Nelson publishing house collection. It’s relevance is made plain in the subtitle: “Understanding God’s Message In The Last Days.”

Every time I review a study Bible, particular my favorite translation the New King James, I  learn something new from the commentary and the supplemental information provided. The NKJV PROPHECY STUDY BIBLE addresses something I firmly believe: we are at the ending of times.

Once you get past the Forward written by John C. Hagee and the list of the Books of the Bible and before you reach Genesis you will come gains very valuable information that makes this book worth while. Important information which you would traditionally have to look for in the back of the book is conveniently in the front. I was particularly interested in the section on Events on the End Times” which includes a discussion on the rapture and the tribulation. So what is at the back of the book? The concordance and maps of course.

Throughout the Bible portion of the NKJV PROPHECY STUDY BILE are other helps including: “20 Questions About Bible Prophecy” and “Diamonds for Daily Living.” In terms of a study Bible I would say this one is more challenging for me personally because it contains more information that I am not familiar with, in other words it is not a cookie-cutter study Bible. I like it!

I recommend the NKJV PROPHECY STUDY BIBLE - Understanding God’s Message In The Last Days” I think everyone should read this one however if you have never read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation before you may not read this one in 12 months.

YOUTUBE REVIEW: SCRIVENER BOOTCAMP by Jason Hough

If you write there are numerous programs available to help organize your thoughts including the old fashioned pen and paper. For the past two or three years I have been using the program SCRIVENER and though I love it I know that I am not taking advantage of all that it has to offer.
SCRIVENER BOOTCAMP Produced by Jason Hough is the best overview of the program I have seen, and I have watched a few.

Steamed live October 26, 2014 in preparation of National Novel Writing Month a.k.a. NaNoWriMo as a way to help those who take advantage of the 30 day FREE trial period SCRIVENOR has offerfed in the past. the video is informative sharing with the viewer what is really necessary to write a novel using SCRIVENER.   is held annually during the month of November, during that time writers throughout this nation  and the world attempt to write a novel in a month. The goal is 50,000 words in 30 days!
I thought it very appropriate to encourage writers to take advantage of the free trial period Scrivener usually offers to participants and for those individuals who have told me they want to write a book

KJV FOUNDATION STUDY BIBLE

Without my great great grandmother I would not be here and without the  King James Version (KJV) of the Bible the other translations may not have existed. No matter how many different translations of the Bible there may be I think everyone should read the KJV of the Bible at least once.

Of the many Bibles available Thomas Nelson has a KJV FOUNDATION STUDY BIBLE that is perfect for anyone who wants to read this particular translation. It includes: cross-references, study noes, maps and a concordance; of course the words of Jesus are in red. I was looking for a King James Bible because I wanted to go back to basics.

With most Bibles that are published today the deciding factor as to what makes it good for you is what is highlighted. The KJV FOUNDATION STUDY BIBLE uses section headings to draw the readers attention to a particular theme, for example: the heading for Isaiah 48:1-8 is “Israel’s Obstinate Nature.”
THE KJV FOUNDATION STUDY BIBLE makes it easy for the individual to learn precepts and principles in Scripture without the assistance of a theologian.

As part of my personal Bible Study reading the Bible from Genesis to Revelations but not in a year as many do. I have read those other translations and I decided they were cute but I love the old way better. There is a NKJV Foundation Bible but I will be using the KJV FOUNDATION STUDY BIBLE as my cross reference book, NKJV is the primary read. I like the format for this book witch includes the cross references together in a text box on the bottom right corner of the page. And I cannot complain about the font which is readable no matter which glasses I use.

The KJV FOUNDATION STUDY BIBLE is an excellent investment and I recommend it.

BLOOD STRIPE: The Susanna Marcasi Chronicles by Gina Maria DiNicolo

If you enjoy books with a twist, political intrigue, sex, guns and powerful women you are going to love BLOOD STRIPE: The Susanna Marcasi Chronicles by Gina Maria DiNicolo. Admittedly, this book is not my cup of tea primarily because of the language, lot’s of profanity, however when in the military people don’t talk nice.
Since I could not skip over the “bad words” (I write tongue in cheek) I dove in. BLOOD STRIPE is definitely a page turner one the reader must pay attention to as he or she moves forward in the book. Every character is important every event has you wondering: Did the author make this up or is this something this U. S. Naval Academy graduate witness in real life?
It was too intense for my squeamish personality which is why I suspect this book is even better than I say it is. If you like true to life fiction you will love this book. If you are a woman considering entering the military- you might want to read BLOOD STRIPE: The Susanna Marcasi Chronicles by Gina Maria DiNicolo. Unlike going to the movies you can’t close your eyes when you get to the “Oh my” parts. (Page turner is so cliche’!)

I was trying to remember the last time I read a book with this much action? I had to go back to when I was a Walter Mosely and James Patterson fan, over ten years ago. Is BLOOD STRIPE as good as books by Mosely or Patterson? Close enough to make you want to read it.

IN SPITE OF THE ODDS by Richie Contartesi

As I began reading IN SPITE OF THE ODDS by Richie Contartesi I realized this book was not something I would normally read for review. Why? Because it is about High School and College football and I am not a fan of either HOWEVER…
The background for IN SPITE OF THE ODDS is sports, a little baseball is mentioned in the beginning, the essence of the book by Speaker, Author and Entrepreneur Richie Contartesi is endurance despite how you may feel.
In a nutshell the book is about how Mr. Contartesi was able to obtain a position on a college football team despite the opinions of those in authority; but that is the obvious plot. A parent reading this book will quickly discover the importance of teaching children the importance of keeping commitments. A person going through difficult times can identify with the rejection the author experienced.

Did I mention that he was playing football 5 7 155 pounds?

Success is not about luck, it requires hardwork, persevarance and determination. I personally believe, and this book confirms it, rejection is part of the journey. The hidden theme of this book is continuing education no matter what your goal is.

IN SPITE OF THE ODDS is highly motivational. I would definitely recommend this book to young men and women who have dreams of success.

YOUTUBE REVIEW: A BEGINNERS GUIDE TO THE WORLD OF SELF PUBLISHING

A BEGINNERS GUIDE TO THE WORLD OF SELF-PUBLISHING uploaded by  Full Sail University is an excellent discussion on publishing a book as well music.
This is a must watch for those who are considering publishing a book. There is general information regarding: traditional publishing, self publishing and independent publishing. Because of my personal experience over the past five years I appreciate 100% of what was said. Even the discussion on independent music producers made sense to me.
What I did not know about was the music aspects of self-producing, apparently writers and musicians have a lot in common.  If you are a musician this video is well worth your watching; don’t fast forward past the writing discussions because the concepts are the same.

This is the first of what will be many reviews of what I watch on YouTube. I would encourage you to “Like” and “Subscribe” to the channels that you watch, this serves as encouragement to the individual posting as well as their ratings. For those who earn money on YouTube it helps with the quality of advertisers they receive and thus increases their revenues which also serves as encouragement. Posting a video is not easy.

PRAYER QUOTES by Kevin W Shorter

The truth is I have more Bibles than I do books on prayer yet I have a lot of books on prayer. In addition I am in the process of editing a book I wrote on prayer which is why the last review I wanted to do was one on prayer. Yet here I am reviewing 2,500+ PRAYER QUOTES inspiration to draw you closer to God. Really?

PRAYER QUOTES by Kevin W Shorter is not what I thought it was going to be and I was truly surprised that I liked it’s content. I am disappointed however that it is an ebook because this is something that should be in print.

So, What is PRAYER QUOTES- inspiration to draw you closer to God? It is exactly what the title declares it to be a series of quotes that relate to praying. It is not a list of Bible promises; those books are becoming so cliche’.

For me, a closet intercessor, I would love to have this book in print so I can use it for a teaching tool. Not only does this book include words that will help direct and motivate prayer but there are quotes from many of my favorite men and women within the world of Christiandom! (Of course I did not recognize everyone he quoted.)

Admittedly, I did not read this book (eBook} cover to cover but I did check out every chapter. This is not something you read like a novel the words, the quotes, should be examined, reviewed, meditated on, digested and absorbed into ones’ soul. Is it possible that there is something in PRAYER QUOTES that I do not like? Of course but it would be so minor that I would not tell you anyway. But the book- though as I write this PRAYER QUOTES by Kevin W. Shorter is a free download on Amazon.

If you want to learn about prayer get this book. I recommend you purchase a copy.

NIrV GIANT PRINT HOLY BIBLE - Zondervan Publishers

I can see! When I opened up the NIrV GIANT PRINT HOLY BIBLE published by Zondervan I was amazed to see “super sized” fonts!
I had heard of, and have several versions of the NIV Bible but never had I heard of the New International Reader’s Version Bible. Promoted as a Bible that is not only easy to read like the NIV but easy to read and understand no matter who is reading it. This is important because many people skip the introduction which contains valuable information regarding how this particular translation was written and notes regarding particular verses.
Did you know that some verses are not included in various translations because some of the original translations did not have them?
Whereas many Bibles have a concordance in the back the NIrV GIANT PRINT HOLY BIBLE has a dictionary which though is not extensive does carry basic definition that are important for Believers to know.  Instead of a Topical Index there is a list of  150 famous Bible Stories.

I chose to read various Scriptures that are often quoted and familiar. This included: Psalm 23 and 91, Proverbs 31, Matthew 6:33 (my favorite verse) Hebrews 11 and lastly Genesis 1. In comparison with its’ counter the NIV Bible the words are not the same, it is even more simplistic.

Part of the beauty of the Bible is the poetic flow of the words. Unfortunately in making the book a much easier read it takes away from some of the majesty. For example we can read in Psalms 23:1: “The Lord is my Shepherd. He gives me everything I need.”  Though this is what ‘the Lord is my Shepherd I shall not want’ means there is a difference.

I think this is a good Bible and if you or someone you know has a desire to read the Bible but lack the motivation to read a more traditional translation the NIrV GIANT PRINT HOLY BIBLE is worth it. My only hope is that after reading this translation the individual would eventually advance to one of the not so simplistic version. I do recommend this Bible, if for no other reason the font is excellent.

NIV BIBLE FOR WOMEN

To me the idea of having a “Bible for women” is not necessary there are many on the market already. But, I find myself reviewing Zondervan’s NIV BIBLE FOR WOMEN. As I opened the Bible to the book of Job I wanted to answer two questions: Why is it necessary to have a Bible for women? How could they spin the book of Job to encourage women?

NIV BIBLE FOR WOMEN is, needles to say, the New International Version Bible translation. It contains has 260 devotions that include: a concept presented by various authors, a short reflection and then ideas as to how one could incorporate the revelation  in prayer. It also addresses 52 myths, philosophies many have regarding faith that are not true. Each myth is based on a specific testimony which has a response based on what the bible says.
I have read the NIV Bible on more than one occasion yet the New King James remains my favorite translation.
For the purpose of this review I decided to examine what “women” issues could be discovered in the book of Job. The answer was found in Myth #49 “If I pray about my problem will it go away.”  If you are familiar with the trials Job went through you will understand how what Job went through relates to what the woman “Stephanie” experienced. The response to the question was well worth reading and appropriately placed in the book of Job.
This is not the first “women’s” Bible that I have had. I received one as a gift from a dear friend - I gave that Bible to my youngest daughter. I purchased a different “women’s” Bible for my oldest daughter many years ago. In comparing Zondervan’s Bible with the other two women’s Bible NIV BIBLE FOR WOMEN is more applicable to the life of todays women and men too.

I like this Bible and I do recommend it. The problem I now have is: do I keep it or do I give the NIV BIBLE FOR WOMEN to my daughter who already asked could she have it.

*Font note: My hard cover copy was not large print but it was easier to read than other standard prints. If you are a reader of my reviews you know my aging eyes do not like small fonts!

MY GOD AND MY ALL -The Life of Saint Francis of Assisi BY Elizabeth Goudge

“MY GOD AND MY ALL- The Life of Saint Francis of Assisi” by Elizabeth Goudge reads like a novel not like a traditional biography. That was my opinion after reading the first chapter of this book, it was not my first impression.

I chose to read and review this book because I had heard of Francis of Assissi but did not know anything about him. Unfortunately, for me, I began to have difficulties once I read “Other great men may alter the material aspect of life for millions, generations, but the saints make us for eternity.” This one sentence found on page 1 did not set well with my beliefs because I believe all Christians are “saints” (1 Corinthians 1:2, 2 Corinthians 1:1, and other verses). It is my understanding that the designation of “sainthood” to individuals is a Catholic doctrine of which I cannot accept therefore I began reading with a personal bias. In addition I firmly believe that each person can influence one person and this is what makes a difference.

I continued to have problems with this book because of the writing style of the author. She wrote as if she was an eyewitness in the life of Francis of Assissi who was born in 1182. The author, Elizabeth Goudge lived from 1900 to 1984 and was an award winning novelist. The details in which she writes which includes dialog assumes that the events presented happened exactly as stated. There is a bibliography sited at the end of the 310 page novel/ biography.

MY GOD AND MY ALL- The Life of Saint Francis of Assisi”  originally written in 1959, though well written, is not suitable as a research tool. Anyone who chooses to research a person with a reputation such as Francis of Assisi would do better reading the writings of any of the individuals listed in the Bibliography.

I would not recommend this book to any of my friends however it may be enjoyable for a person who simply seeks a superficial knowledge of a Catholic history.

NKJV FOUNDATION STUDY BIBLE Thomas Nelson Publisher

If you have followed my reviews for any length of time you know I love reviewing the latest version of the oldest book ever. Thomas Nelson publishing latest edition to Bibles is the NKJV FOUNDATION STUDY BIBLE is one of many I expect will be released in the upcoming holiday season. I can tell any person wanting to purchase a Bible: You cannot go wrong with a New King James version of Scripture.

What makes the NKJV FOUNDATION STUDY BIBLE worth purchasing? I can tell you it is not the font, like many study Bibles the size of the font is requires 20/20 vision or a very clean pair of glasses. At some point Thomas Nelson has to realize that most of the individuals who will purchase their books wear glasses, younger people use computers.

What is good about this Bible? This is what you want to read if you are reading the Bible from Genesis to Revelations for the first time. Unlike other study Bibles the reader is not bogged down in details that can become overwhelming. The introduction to each book gives a brief note a to who the author is; the time in which the book was written; a key verse and a brief note presenting the theme of the book.
As it relates to the “study” aspects of the NKJV FOUNDATION STUDY BIBLE it is helpful for personal study. I reviewed comments, found at the bottom of the page, from the books of: Exodus, Isaiah, Psalms, John, and 1 Corinthians. The commentaries added clarity to the verses, a few included verses to validate the opinion. Unlike other Bibles the cross references are noted in a text box at the bottom of each page which is not inconvenient.
What I did see, even without my glasses (!), were the titles above specific text. They serve as great cheat-sheets for those who are looking for a particular verse but are not quite sure  where that verse is and an overview of what the reader is about to read. By having such headings as: “Many Women Minister to Jesus” the reader can anticipate reading about specific female followers of Jesus.

Also included: an index of topics aka- Theological Notes Index by Title & Theological Notes Index by Location; various maps and the words of Jesus in red.

I recommend this book for those new to the Bible, as part of a Bible reading plan, for those who prefer taking a Bible to church instead of using a program on the cell phone. Would I purchase it if I had not received one for free (despite the font size) yes.

I apologize for the length of this review (I try to keep them less than 250 words) but I felt it necessary.

CHILDRENS' BOOK REVIEW- STAY! A TOP DOG STORY by Alex Latimer

Eye appeal is crucial when creating a book for children and the cover of STAY! A TOP DOG STORY by Alex Latimer looks like something my 7 year old grandson would be interested in. Aside from the graphics which were pretty cool the book was not for him.
The plot an overactive dog, was conceptually interesting. Unfortunately the wording did not flow in such a manner that it is easy to read aloud. Nor could it capture and hold the attention of a 7 year old particularly if your goal is to get him or her to read the book with little or no assistance.
The graphics were drawings which were apparently digitally enhanced. This may have been OK if the story was not so wordy.  Older children, particularly those who are tech savey, will find the graphics boring.
I reviewed an ebook copy of STAY! A TOP DOG STORY which did not present well. The publishing credits were mixed in with the first pages of the book. Because this was an advance copy of a book that is to be released in print I disregarded those technical errors.

Even evaluating this book on a “curve” I cannot recommend it. I don’t know what child would find this book worth owning.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest opinion.  The opinions of this review are my own.

The expected release date of STAY! A TOP DOG STORY: September 1 2015

SPENT MATCHES by Roy Moran

I chose to review this book simply because no one else seemed to. I kept waiting for someone among the BOOKLOOK reviewers to post a review but after about a month there was still no takers. By the time I had received SPENT MATCHES by Roy Moran in the mail there were a few reviews posted. As I began reading it I could understand why the delay. The book is not something I would rush to the store to purchase because I just do not want to read another book about what is wrong with churches and how do we fix it.
This is a good book, well written. If you are an introspective person who wants to evaluate your faith you might want to read it. If you are a church leader or considering entering the ministry I would suggest you read this book.
I don’t think the information presented is “new” thus SPENT MATCHES is more of a reminder of what those who are followers of Jesus should be doing. I think the book serves as a course correction, unfortunately I doubt the individuals who need to read this book will.
I don’t know if SPENT MATCHES will help ignite the fire in the spiritually dissatisfied however the book does have valid points to make. I am honestly not excited about this book HOWEVER I still recommend it. Every now and then a book reviewer will come across a book this is good but not for her, this book is that book for me.

IGNITED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT by Ivy Adjivon

IGNITED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT by Ivy Adjivon is a testimony of the power and purpose of the Holy Spirit in the life of a Believer, the authors. In sharing her personal testimony the author is able to validate the necessity of the Holy Spirit.
This is a short book, 28 pages in total, which means the author gets straight to the point without a lot of unnecessary filler. Much of the book involves a conversation Ivy Adjivon had with the Holy Spirit that points out how important He is in our life. IGNITED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT is a quick and easy to read booklet that is worth reading.

I recommend this book.

SEWING: THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO MASTERING SEWING... by Jessica Pickens

I am a sewer, not a great one but good enough. I don’t like most of the clothing styles available in the stores today: skirts are too short and tops are boo revealing. I chose to download this book with the very long title because I need to make my own clothing and I watn to be better at making them.
I think this book is almost perfect, it is just what a person needs except graphics. SEWING: THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO MASTERING SEWING FOR BEGINNERS IN 30 MINUTES OR LESS! By Jessica Pickens is a step by step manual for creating your own wardrobe starting with understanding the tools for sewing.
I was pleasantly surprised to discover instructions on how to create your own patterns for shirts and pants. To me this is the added bonus not the final Bonus Chapter: Knitting for Beginners.
Though this book is great for newbies, it is also beneficial to the casual / hobby sewer such as myself. I recommend it.

JEWELRY WITH A CAUSE- VISION BIJOU

”Most impressive; that was my first response when I saw what a group of people could do with larimar. What is larimar?   It is a unique crystallized mineral, pectolite which normally has white to grayish color. Larimar also called “Stefilia’s Stone” is unique because of it’s shades of blue coloring.  VISION BIJOU was created to take this rare stone and present it to the world in the form of jewelry.  What the craftsman have been able to do with this stone is, in my opinion “most impressive.”

https://www.etsy.com/listing/173352252/larimar-earing-sale?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=VISION%20BIJOU&ref=sr_gallery_1

VISION BIJOU is the internet based outlet where you and your friends can purchase the various items offered. I must warn you: each piece though similar in design, because it is natural stone, has it’s own personality to it. No two pieces are exactly alike.
VISION BIJOU is jewelry with a cause; there is a purpose for the sale of the jewelry that goes beyond capitalism. ONE HUNDRED PERCENT (100%) of the profit  goes to supporting families in the poverty ridden Dominican Republic; the cost of supplies, shipping and handling are the ONLY adjustments made. It is safe to assume that without VISION BIJOU the workers would be unemployed.

Like other churches around the world VISION CHURCH MIAMI reaches out into the community. One church in particular is IGLESIA VISION SANTO DOMINICO, the home of VISION BIJOU.

Understanding the poverty cycle the leadership at VISION CHURCH MIAMI chose to do more than just pay the expenses associated with supporting a church.  Under the leadership of Pastor Mathias Grehn the church sponsored (paid for) the development of a jewelry making business which has become a job creator and a much needed source of income for the community. As the jewelry sales increase there will be a need to bring on more workers. Those originally trained will become the trainers, this is how you break the cycle of poverty.

Not only is IGLESIAVISION SANTO DOMINICO feeding the souls of men and women in a very poor part of the Dominican Republic it is also strengthening the family by alleviating the stress associated with poverty. VISION BIJOU is jewelry with a cause and the cause is worth supporting.

As I was researching larimar for this post I came across a company that sells something similar (for a profit without a cause) for three times the amount offered via VISION BIJOU. I happen to know a new shipment of jewelry recently came in to the office; it is always WHILE SUPPLIES LAST.
VISION BIJOU is jewelry with a cause.

CHILDRENS BOOK REVIEW: IF HE HAD NOT COME by David Nicholson

Technically “IF HE HAD NOT COME” is a children’s book however the message is for everyone. IF HE HAD NOT COME originally told by Nan Weeks and reintroduced by David Nicholson is a story that ask the question: What would happen if Jesus had not come?
IF HE HAD NOT COME begins on Christmas Eve the day before the day we celebrate the birth of Jesus but without the birth of our Lord and Savior there is no Christmas Day. Not only that there can be no Christianity which means there are no churches or the activities that the church does.
The simplicity of the book facilitates a great meditation of John 15:22 which is supported by the six discussion questions presented at the end of the story. As a parent or Children’s church teacher they are excellent questions to help point out to the young that Christmas is not about gifts. These questions are great even for adults and for more mature Believers there are more questions that take you deeper into the meaning of Christmas.
The book concludes with the Gospel Message and the steps to salvation something needed by all young and old.
I recommend this book and suggest that it is read not only during the Christmas season but whenever you think about Christ.  Marsha L Randolph

BELIEVE KID'S EDITION by Randy Frazee General Editor

Think- Act- Be, these are the responses every Christian should have when studying God’s word. BELIEVE KIDS’ EDITION by Randy Frazee is a Bible study for young children using the NIV Bible translation, recommended age 8-12.
My grandson (age 7) has the BELIEVE storybook edition and my granddaughter (age 11) has the BELIEVE student edition I approached this book review thinking about how they would receive the information as it was presented.
Unlike most Bible commentaries and study guides BELIEVE focuses on application of the word. The reader is encouraged to think about what he or she has read, consider how to respond or act to what was read and apply what was learned in his or her life.  This book makes a great introduction to faith and Bible study because it matches Old Covenant Scripture with New Covenant Scripture. Upon completion of BELIEVE KID’S EDITION young people will understand why it is important to follow Jesus.
I have reviewed each of the BELIEVE books: Storybook, Kid’s Edition, Student Edition and the adult version, I think I enjoyed the student’s edition the most though I appreciated the value of each. There is something very appropriate about the presentation of the material as well as the order in which it was presented. I am amazed at the amount of information that was presented though the book is less than 1/4 the size of a Bible (Kid’s Edition is 210 pages)
Any of these books including BELIEVE Kids’ Edition would be great to use for Bible Study at home and in your church. I recommend this book.

BELIEVE STUDENT EDITION Randy Frazee

Randy Freeze is the General Editor of a series of books that tell the story of Jesus from Genesis to Revelations using selections from the New International Version of the Bible. BELIEVE STUDENT EDITION is specifically written for young people (this copy is going to my 10 year old granddaughter) to develop a foundational knowledge of Christianity.
There are three sectional concepts: Think- Act- Be which are taught in each of the “Believe” Bible commentary / study guides. Each chapter that falls under the concept introduces a Bible truth which is age appropriate. For example: Chapter 13 “Act” discusses Bible study. In each chapter has: Key Question; Key Idea; Key Verse; Text which includes Bible verses from Old and New Testament; and concludes with What We Believe.
The order in which information is presented makes perfect sense and I am confident that anyone, young or old, reading this book will have a better understanding of what it means to be a Christian. This book can be read independently by either a novice or a person that has read the Bible before. It can also be used in church as part of the Bible Study curriculum.
I have reviewed the adult version of Believe- “BELIEVE LIVING THE STORY OF THE BIBLE TO BECOME LIKE JESUS”; The children’s version: “BELIEVE STORYBOOK”  and now this one ‘BELIEVE STUDENT EDITION, I like each. If you are not a fan of the NIV Bible you may not enjoy this book however the advantage of having anyone read BELIEVE STUDENT EDITION is to get him or her interested in reading the Bible.
I thoroughly enjoyed reviewing each of the BELIEVE books.  Marsha L Randolph

CHILDREN'S BOOK REVIEW: JULIETTE & RYO by Peter Philipp

In my opinion JULIETTE & RYO by Peter Philipp is a girl book, of course in this politically correct world many will argue “There is no such thing!”. As with most children’s books I read this one with my eight year old grandson, by the second page he was tired of reading it and by the time I finished the book he was half-listening to the story. (Truth is I don’t think he was listening at all.)
This book has dreams and dragons and fairies there are caves and rescues and all the excitement a good story should have. As I read it I kept thinking of the children’s game “Candy Land”
Overall the story is well written and for little girls (and some boys) who like fairy stories this will be a good read.

BELIEVE STORYBOOK by Randy Frazee

When a writer puts a lot of thought into a book it is very apparent from page one, this is the case with BELIEVE STORYBOOK by Randy Frazee with Laurie Lassaro Knowlton and illustrated by Steve Adams.I started reading this book to my eight year old grandson as soon as the book arrived and we were instantly lost in the pages.

BELIEVE STORYBOOK Think, Act, Be Like Jesus is the Bible explained on a level young children can not only understand but learn from. Beginning with the story of creation the stories of the Bible are presented to help children see the Trinity from the Old Testament to the New without neglecting the Trinity.

I like this book because it does explain the reason why we are Christians and does not over simplify Scripture.  BELIEVE agrees with what he has been taught at home, what  is taught in church and what the Bible says, I did not find any major issues with Bible interpretation. My grandson loved this book and instantly declared “It’s mine!”

I only read a few pages with him but went through the book independently. In terms of Bible study this is an excellent book to use for home and church. Each chapter begins with something to “THINK” about presented in the form of a question. There is an Old Testament story which is linked to a New Testament story by a section on “The Jump to Jesus”. The chapter concludes with “The Jesus Answer” with another age appropriate question and discussion. Finally the reader is asked to “Believe” as a Key Idea and a Key Verse is given.

This book is a definite must buy! I recommend it. Buy it as a gift. Marsha L Randolph

THE FINE ART OF SELF PUBLISHING by Mark Levine

Before you are forced to eat humble pie and before you publish that book do some research. Start with the book THE FINE ART OF SELF PUBLISHING by Mark Levine. Don’t take my word for it, even though I have published a print book and a few ebooks and have made numerous of mistakes. This is the FIFTH edition which should tell you that a lot of people have read it and there is a demand for it.
THE FINE PRINT OF SELF PUBLISHING is an easy to read, much easier than some of the other books I have (and have given away), book on what it means to be a published author.
There are a lot of things you need to know about publishing. For example: this book explains the difference between: self-publishing, vanity publishing and traditional publishing as well as the pros and cons of each. Do yourself a favor and read this prior to finishing your manuscript. It is also important to know: not all self publishing companies are created equal.
Based on what I did a few people I know decided to self-publish but do it there way- for them the humble pie is ready but they have yet to admit that despite spending thousands of dollars their way was not better. Though I read quite a few books, attended a few webinars and talked to quite a few people before publishing I wish I had purchased THE FINE PRINT OF SELF PUBLISHING prior to writing The Truth About Vashtai or the 3 published ebooks. I will, however, be using this book as a reference from this moment forward,

Even if you have self-published before I recommend this book and if your plan is to submit your book for publishing you really need to read this book. Get it, read it and get a copy for a friend.

CHILDREN'S BOOK REVIEW: THE BEHEMOTH DINOSAUR IN THE LAND OF UZ by Maryluz Guerrero Salas

Children’s books have to capture instantly the eye catcher for this book was the dinosaur. Boys love dinosaurs and some girls do to thus the expectations of the book were high. But then there is the title THE BEHEMOTH DINOSAUR IN THE LAND OF UZ, say that three times real fast!  But there was something I did not see at first glance because other than the dinosaur I did not like the cover and that was the other title of the book.
This book is bi-lingual which does not make sense to me. As an English speaker I purchase books written in English, I know my Spanish speaking friends can obtain the same book translated and vice-versa. The fact that I was reading an ebook eliminates the excuse of saving trees, the publishers could have very easily produced an English version, a Spanish version and any other translation. The problem is having to skip over the other language interrupts the flow of reading, for a children's book this is even more of a problem.
This is not a book conducive to learning how to read English or Spanish thus even though the plot, about sharing and helping each other may be a good one, it really gets’ lost in the multiple translations.

I did not enjoy this book, my eight year old grandson showed absolutely no interest in this book. This is one of those books in which you can judge by it’s cover. I don’t recommend

THE ART OF WINNING by Jeffrey Rachmat

Before I even tell you about this book I have to thank Pastor Mathias Grehn of VISION CHURCH -Miami Florida for this great gift of wisdom. I must also say: This is one of the most fabulous book covers I have seen since “The Truth About Vastai.” {Yes, this is a cheap plug for my book!}
It does not take a lot of words when the ones chosen are succinct which is what you will find in THE ART OF WINNING by Jeffrey Rachmat. This book takes the reader from precept to precept for those whose goal it is to live according to God’s purpose using Biblical principles. One hundred ten pages is really all it took and yet by the time the reader is finished it is as if he or she has read more.
THE ART OF WINNING by Jeffrey Rachmat presents the biblical definition of and principles associated with success applicable for anyone no matter what the life path is. There are so many nuggets of wisdom found through out this book that I could not choose one; however, I have underlined an entire paragraph and put an asterisk by the section entitled: “[transforming abilities into expertise]” this section concludes with “Excellence has its price and people of excellence are highly paid in these and other fields.”
This book was published in 2004 and a second edition in 2010 a quick search revealed that it is only available on Amazon in eBook format.  If you are in business or ministry this book is definitely worth looking for in print if possible but at least the ebook is available. I recommend and encourage you purchase this book

HOW TO ENJOY READING YOUR BIBLE by Keith Ferrin

I have always enjoyed reading my Bible (note, I said “my” Bible because it has always been a personal experience for me).In choosing to review HOW TO ENJOY READING YOUR BIBLE by Keith Ferrin my goal was to see if he agreed with me; failure to do so would result in a bad review.
I am pleased to say I enjoyed reading this book, Keith Ferrin put in writing, and then some, what I share with people as encourage them to take their time and study God’s word. HOW TO ENJOY READING YOUR BIBLE delivers exactly what the title implies. There are 10 tips that are very helpful and easy to implement when reading the Bible.
More than just a book on how to read a Bible HOW TO ENJOY READING YOUR BIBLE (emphasis on your)takes away the negative feelings, apprehensions and perhaps even fear many people may associate with reading the Bible. Reading God’s Word no longer becomes a chore but becomes a time of fellowship with God.
I particularly appreciated Tip #2 “Set Your Expectations Really High” often I think we approach Bible reading in reverse. Other people may appreciate Tip 9 “Go On A 60 Day Adventure.”  But it is good to know there are choices as Tip #7 “Read Alone” and Tim #9 “Don’t Read Alone” point out.
Because each tip “Study Guide Tips” questions that can be used as part of a group HOW TO ENJOY READING YOUR BIBLE is great as a Bible Study tool for people who have never read the Bible. It can also be used for people who have tried to read it but gave up or people who read it all the way through once and have yet to do it again. There are so many people who read the Bible in a year as part of their routine but don’t really enjoy the process, this is an excellent book for them.
I recommend this book.

CHILDRENS' BOOK REVIEW: CHANNING O'BANNING AND THE TURQUOISE TRAIL by Angela Spady

At 55 years old it would be foolish of me to recommend a children’s book purely based on what I think thus I have commissioned my 7 year old grandson. My grandson and I began reading CHANNING O’BANNING AND THE TURQUOISE TRAIL by Angela Spady together. This is a chapter book and though my grandson enjoyed our time together and he showed a lot of interest in the book his attention decreased by chapter four. My ten year old granddaughter, on the other hand, seemed to find something to do in the room I was reading to her brother.
CHANNING O’BANNING AND THE TURQUOISE TRAIL is a very enjoyable read appropriate for both girls and boys who are ready for chapter books. The author gradually introduces Native American history which adds to the value of the book.
The story line reads very well. The reader is introduced to friends digging in the school grounds and like a puzzle gradually develops chapter by chapter.
Of course my grandson wanted me to hear more. Of course my granddaughter kept finding reasons to be in the room as I read. The truth is I could not wait to read the next chapter, the book is good.
I recommend this book, though I am not versed in Native American history there is also 7 facts on Native Americans at the end of the book which adds even more value.

THE COMPLETE 101 COLLECTION by John C. Maxwell

John C. Maxwell is an expert at teaching individuals how to be effective in speaking as well as leading; he does this through his books, videos and workshops. The 101 series is a must have set of books for anyone who is interested in being the best at whatever he or she chooses to be which is why THE COMPLETE 101 COLLECTION is a must have.
My personal opinion is that THE COMPLETE 101 COLLECTION is an excellent resources for not only developing leadership skills but also great tool for self-evaluation. Read book 1/ chapter 1 “Attitude”, by the time you get to the chapter/ subchapter “What Shapes A Person’s Attitude” you will understand how reading this book can help in all of your interactions with people.
By the time you get to the last book / chapter of THE COMPLETE 101 COLLECTION- “Mentoring 101”- it will be easy to see how the tips and observations John Maxwell shares in this book can apply to not just being a leader but a spouse and a parent.
Of course, John C. Maxwell’s target audience are individuals who are or want to be leaders.  I have quite a few of his books including The John C. Maxwell Leadership Bible, as a Christian I appreciate his faith based lessons on leadership. The six 101 leadership books found in THE COMPLETE 101 COLLECTION- What Every Leader Needs To Know provides any leader a resource for self evaluation as well as career development. I recommend this book. xxx Marsha L Randolph

WISDOM IS A WOMAN

It is hard to right a review for a book you take an instant disliking to. Perhaps because it was not what I thought it was going to be or perhaps it was the tone of the book but I just did not like WISDOM IS A WOMAN BY Heidi Lee.
As I read WISDOM IS A WOMAN - Exploring the Wisdom of God it is almost as if the author is trying justify her opinions of womanhood by manipulating Scripture. Heidi Lee presents her comments on the female influence within the Bible in both the Old and New Testament.Unfortunately, I question her interpretation.

“Interestingly, the most thorough account of biblical womanhood is found in the final twenty-one verses of the book of Proverbs. These ending verses of chapter 31 appear to be a tribute to a virtuous and capable wife.”  (ebook page 123/362)

I disagree with the idea that Proverbs 31 is the most thorough account of biblical womanhood. It is probably the most preached but the Bible presents a variety of women with their own unique characteristics not limited to Proverbs.
I think my biggest problem with WISDOM IS A WOMAN is I can’t seem to reconcile the title with the content. I expected a book that celebrated womanhood- discussing the various contributions of women in the Bible and what I read was a discussion of womens’ “issues”. (Including a mention of menstrual cycle!)

No, I don’t recommend this book but I could be wrong you may find it a great book.  And I just did not see the relationship between womanhood and godly wisdom.

SEARCHING FOR SUNDAY by Rachel Held Evans

“Millennials aren’t looking for a hipper Chrisitianity. I said. We’re looking for a truer Christianity, a more authentic Christianity.” These words found on page xiv of SEARCHING FOR SUNDAY by Rachel Held Evans not only grabbed my attention but sold me on the validity of the book. What I discovered through the 261 pages was a map towards a truer authentic faith.

What I like about SEARCHING FOR SUNDAY by Rachel Held Evans is the honesty of her words. The sub-title “loving, leaving and finding the church” appropriately describes the journey of many Believers particularly baby boomers and millennials. The authors words take away some of the traditional mindset as it relates to church doctrine including baptism and communion.
I cannot emphasize enough how refreshingly honest this book is. The reader, if you have ever been in church for a prolonged period of time, will be nodding his or her head when the chapter called “Dirty Laundry” is read. Fear not this book is not a list of problems within the church, quite the opposite.
SEARCHING FOR SUNDAY -loving, leaving and finding the church is a beacon calling all to the church. This book is a reason for church.
I would suggest church leaders read this book as a way of balancing God’s Word with today’s technology. I recommend this book to Believers who are becoming frustrated with church as usual in order to develop a new perspective on why he or she fellowships.

CHILDREN'S BOOK REVIEW

When I review children’s books I usually read to or with one of my grandchildren but since I did not have anything else to do I decided to read THE SHIP SHAPE SHOP by Frank Rodgers alone. Sad as the thought may be I was looking forward to reading a whimsical story about some type of store but that is not what I got.
As I read words like “the family’s snooty next-door neighbor” (kindle location 9 12%) it gave me pause. Did I want my grandchildren thinking calling neighbors names was acceptable, no matter how unpleasant they might be. Then I read how As I read more this feud between the neighbors led to the shop being condemned and despite efforts to restore and repair the government still bulldozed the building. - Really? Are we teaching children about the bad government?

The “happy” ending is a new building replaced the old unfortunately, this is not a story I will be sharing with my grandchildren and I do not recommend anyone reading it to theirs.   The one good- great graphics.

NIV PROCLOMATION BIBLE Correctly Handling The Word of Truth -Zondervan Publishin

Sometimes there can be too many choices, I find this to be true when I am buying coffee, cereal and even a candy bar; this also can be true when it comes to purchasing a Bible. There was a time when everyone owned a red letter edition King James Bible now a person can become overwhelmed when choosing a Bible. Like coffee, cereal and candy bars deciding which Bible to buy is a matter of choice.
I decided to review the NIV PROCLAMATION BIBLE because of the title: Proclamation. Because I have read the NIV Bible on more than one occasion I am very much aware of the writing style and how it is translated. What I asked myself as I examined the books, comments and outlines within was:
  • Is this book good for a new Believer?
  • For a person who has read the Bible more than once would they benefit from owning this particular translation?
  • Knowing that I have at least 3 different NIV Bibles would I purchase this one?

The NIV PROCLAMATION BIBLE is a different type of study Bible which may catch many Bible connoisseurs off guard. Don’t expect lengthy notes at the bottom of the page instead find notes regarding translations. Yes, the center column includes cross references- a study tool most use. What I find unique is perspectives presented at the beginning of the book as well as before each book.
Most Bibles include a “how to section” in which the reader can understand the Bible format, though the standard preface is there I would suggest you skip that and glance over the impressive list of contributors stopping at the first important study: “What Is The Bible?” Included in this chapter are subcategories: The Basis of Christian confidence in the Bible; The God-breathed character of the Bible; The sufficiency of the Bible; The truthfulness of the Bible; The clarity of the Bible; and The authority of the Bible.
The other chapters which serve as a preamble to actually reading Scripture are things I have taught, I have been taught or I have researched. In addition to each book of the Bible having an introduction which includes an outline and references there is also a very good concordance. Soooo..

  • Is this book good for a new believer? Yes, particularly if he or she really wants to understand the Word of God.
  • Would a person who has Bibles benefit from purchasing this one? Yes, even if you have a study Bible that has notes at the bottom of the page.
  • Would I purchase this Bible? Yes.

If you have read any of my reviews you know that I love Bibles and I have so many that I usually give my review copies to individuals who are in need of one; I am keeping this one.  I recommend this Bible. xxx Marsha L Randolph
